OABE benefits local high school students This year's Oakville Awards for Business Excellence (OABE) will see at least 14 Oakville graduating high school students benefitting from the proceeds of the event. On Wednesday, March 7, at the Oakville Conference Centre, awards for business excellence will be presented to six outstanding businesses and entrepreneurs of 2011. Funds raised from partners, supporters and ticket sales of the gala event will benefit local youths, according to an OABE release. Scholarships of $2,000 each and bursaries of $1,000 each will assist Oakville high school students to further their post-secondary education. The scholarships are based on academic excellence and community service. The bursaries are determined by financial need. The deadline for completed applications to the Rotary Club of Oakville West is March 23. Applicants are graduating students from Oakville's high schools from both Halton public and Catholic school boards. The Rotary Club works with high school guidance staff who collect the applications from students exemplifying academic excellence and community involvement, and also from those demonstrating financial need. Student Rotary Award recipients are acknowledged at the annual Oakville Awards for Academic Excellence held in late May or early June each year. The Rotary Club hosted the awards dinner last year where more than 30 graduating high school students were Rotary-award recipients for financial support of their post-secondary education. "To sponsor these young people in their passion for learning and acknowledge their contribution to this community is both humbling and rewarding," Ben Custodio, chair of New Generation Committee for Rotary Club of Oakville West, said in the release. "It is a privilege to meet them and support their educational endeavours in a positive and meaningful way." The OABE is a program of the Rotary Club of Oakville West in partnership with the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. Working together, the two groups have grown and refined this premier event that is now in its 17th year. With the success of the OABE program through sponsorship and ticket sales, Rotary Club of Oakville West receives the financial resources necessary to support the many youth initiatives of the local service club.
