CYAN offers volunteer opportunities for Oakville's youths, which can go towards their required volunteer hours for high school. "We offer development workshops that youths can take part in and gain skills to take with them in life," Matheson said. "We also hold fun events like the annual fun skate." This year's annual skate will act as a fundraiser to support the group's monthly intergenerational program at Northridge LongTerm Care Centre and Safetynet Family and Children's Charities. What began with a few local teens desiring to become leaders in the Oakville area, CYAN is dedicated to partnering with local organizations to increase the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people ages 14 to 25. The network consists of its founder and executive director Madeleine Buhlau, Michelle Siler, a youth engagement assistant and six board members who volunteer weekly to help run the charity group. "Our mission is to strengthen, expand and promote the impact of youth civic engagement," said Tiffany Matheson, youth liaison on the board of directors. "Our vision is to nurture a community culture of engaged youths who are committed to a lifetime of service, learning, fitness, awareness, leadership and achievement. "We wanted to make the connection with adults and youths and make the world a better place... youths are the future and we wanted to engage them in making a difference at a early age."
