10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 9, 2011 Walk for ALS and help to raise money for equipment and support services for those living with ALS, and raise funds towards research to find a treatment and a cure. Our volunteer committee is very appreciative of your unwavering support despite Acton/Georgetown Walk for ALS the huge morning storm that caused the cancellation of our Walk for ALS. Acton/Georgetown once again showed Walk for Those Who Can't! what our community can accomplish. Share the Road message continues Halton Police are trying to get the message out to motorists and cyclists to Share the Road. Last year there were six serious injury collisions involving cyclists and one fatality. In an effort to raise awareness of the issue Halton Police have partnered with the Share the Road Cycling Coalition founded by Eleanor McMahon. McMahon's husband OPP Sgt. Greg Stobbart died in 2006 after he was hit by a truck while cycling in Halton. Stobbart was killed by a five-times repeat suspended driver who fled the scene. McMahon has been trying to get legislation passed to increase road safety. Last weekend officers patrolled major cycling routes in Halton with the focus on enhancing both motorist and cyclist understanding of the rules of the road and the need to Share the Road. A pamphlet on cycling safety was distributed and is available at www.haltonpolice.ca. This weekend will be an education and enforcement initiative by police. "Our collective goal is to ensure roads are safe for all users, and that a spirit of cooperation exists for joint road use based on the understanding that we all have an obligation to respect not only our safety but the safety of others-- in essence to Share the Road," said Deputy Police Chief Bob Percy.
