www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, January 13, 2012 · 10 Town's snow removal crews ready for winter conditions By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF While Oakville hasn't seen a lot of snow so far this winter, there is bound to be some and when it falls, the Town of Oakville's snow clearing fleet will be hitting the streets to deal with it. With snow predicted for the GTA today, that may happen sooner rather than later. Residents should be aware that during a snowstorm, primary roads such as Trafalgar, Lakeshore and Upper Middle roads are cleared first. Secondary roads such as Glenashton Drive and Bridge Road are cleared soon after. The Town's website states this is done so members of the public and emergency service vehicles can safely move around town. The website also states residential streets are plowed only after an excess of 10 cm of snow accumulates. The Town's goal is to have all streets cleared of snow within 24 hours after the end of a storm, however, heavy snowfalls or successive storms can extend this period. The salting and sanding of roads follows a similar priority order. Sidewalks are cleared only after snow accumulates in excess of 5 cm and only after roads are cleared. Sidewalks located on primary and secondary roads with schools are plowed first, followed by residential sidewalks. Sidewalk salting and sanding is done only on primary and secondary sidewalks when extremely slippery conditions exist. Residents can help the winter months pass smoothly by removing snow from the area around fire hydrants and drainage catch basins near their properties and by piling snow on the right side of their driveways (when facing the road) to minimize the windrow created by the snowplow at the end of their driveways. Residents are also reminded that parking on town streets is not permitted between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., from Nov. 15 to April 15, unless a special permit is purchased.
