The event was held to promote the third annual Peace of Minds Yogathon to be held at Appleby College Feb. 25. With a similar event to be held in Toronto that same day, the yogathon will benefit the more than 500,000 individuals in Ontario impacted by schizophrenia by raising funds and awareness for the services of the Oakville-based Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (SSO). According to the SSO, one in 100 people will be diagnosed with schizophrenia, most often in the prime of their youth -- the reason the disease is known as youth's greatest disabler. The brain disease most affects people aged 16 to 25 years. The yogathon will run from 8 a.m-4 p.m. and participants are asked to raise funds individually, through pledges (a minimum of $100 for the day), or to form teams of up to eight. Proceeds go towards the SSO's youth education and outreach programs. For more information, contact Tasha Thomas at tthomas@schizophrenia.on.ca or call 416-449-6830.
