www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, December 15, 2011 · 18 LeMay acclaimed as chair of Halton Catholic school board By Tim Whitnell METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP The longest-serving trustee at either school board in Halton Region is back as the chair of the Catholic board. Alice Anne LeMay, an Oakville trustee since 1980, was acclaimed chair of the board for a one-year term at a Dec. 6 Halton Catholic District School Board meeting. "Thank you for your faith in me, but the board isn't just about me but about all trustees and student trustees -- and the real reason why we're here is for the students," LeMay said, in accepting the chair's role once again. First-term trustee Diane Rabenda of Milton was named the new vice-chair of the board. Both women were acclaimed as they went unchallenged for the positions -- the same scenario played out last year when LeMay and Burlington-trustee Arlene Iantomasi were acclaimed chair and vicechair respectively. LeMay served as the board's chair in consecutive terms from December 199495, for 1995-96 and again from September 2007 to December 2009. As another board veteran, Rabenda had decades of experience as a teacher, principal and superintendent of education with the Catholic board before being elected the trustee for Milton in 2010. As one-year terms, the chair and vice-chair sit on the board from the first regular meeting in December to the first meeting the following December. The role of the board chair, in part, is to moderate trustee meetings by ensuring discussion of board issues stays on topic and remains civil, as well as monitor and rule on the way discussions proceed, at times. The vice-chair fills the same role when the chair is unavailable or unable to lead the board. The nine-member slate of trustees for the Catholic board is rounded out by Oakville trustees Paul Marai, Anthony Danko and Ed Viana, Burlington trustees Arlene Iantomasi, John Morrison and Jane Michael, and Halton Hills trustee John Mark Rowe.
