www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 7, 2011 · 4 Thanksgiving Day is 5KSM Turkey Run By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A group of `wowzers' from Wellington West Capital (WWC) in Oakville are hoping to do well in Kerr Street Ministries' (KSM) Thanksgiving Day 5KSM Turkey Run. Next Monday's 5k run at Heritage Square will be the second year the investment firm has took part in the event. As this year's five-member group, "The Wowzers," prepared for the charity event, captain Andy Martin said WWC has supported KSM before, and will continue to do so in the future. "It's a fantastic cause and this is something I think we will be doing on an ongoing basis. My daughters volunteer there; my wife, I think, is going to be involved (and) work closely with it as well. It's something we, as a family, believe in and, I think, as a firm, it's also something we support," said Martin. "The Wowzers" will be in the 5-km Team Challenge Run category, which Martin ran last year for the first time as his first "sort of real run" in about 10 years, he said. He has been training for this year's run since July. raiser for the KSM programs that help support 5,000 of Oakville's less fortunate. "The event has grown steadily since its inception in 2006 and has become a fall favourite for both competitive and recreational runners. The addition of events for children makes it a great outing for families," said race director Dave O'Halloran in a press release. The 5k run and walk are the main events, along with a 1k children's fun run and a 300-metre toddler turkey run. There will be prizes for single and team categories, including top corporate, community and open teams. Along with Martin, WWC team members are Diana Orlic, Merima Husic, Jackie Kendrick and Ty Cooke. Cooke has been running for close to 10 years and took part in last year's run, he said. "I try to run two to three times a week, varying distances, always more than 5k, so a 5k run shouldn't hopefully be too much of an issue for me. I don't do anything different than I have for basically15 years," said Cooke. "I just ran the Oakville 10k (Budds' BMW 10k), so I was kind of training for that, and two or three times a week, anywhere from three to 12k I was running," said Martin. "There's lots of room for improvement, but I'm glad I was able to get out there and get some running done." Martin said it probably took him around 27 minutes to finish the 5k last year, and the toughest part for him in running that distance is being properly prepared and being fit enough to do it in a decent time. "It's just staying fit and staying healthy, really. If you can have those two components then you can put in the time to train and do so in a healthy manner. It's really just the time to train," said Martin. The annual run is a major fund- To our over 24 sponsors and 150 bike riders who participated to raise $110,000 for the New Oakville Hospital, the Tour de Halton planning committee and the Oakville Hospital Foundation would like to say, THANK YOU!
