The Canadian Cancer Society Halton Unit is cur- rently looking for volun- teers for the annual Pink Ribbon Days campaign run- ning Sept. 29 to Oct. 2. Breast cancer remains the most commonly diag- nosed cancer in Canadian women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women, said Sandy McDonald, the unit's fundraising co-ordinator. Screening is key to fighting breast cancer because it can detect the disease early when it is most treatable. The Canadian Cancer Society Pink Ribbon Days brings public awareness to Breast Cancer during the month of October. Last year, the Canadian Cancer Society invested $2.7 million to support world-class breast cancer research. Recently, two of the soci- ety's ground-breaking breast cancer clinical trials made news headlines because they will change how breast cancer is pre- vented and treated around the world. The first study relates to preventing breast cancer in women who are at increased risk for the disease. For these women our study The Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Service of Halton (SAVIS) is extending its services to male survivors of sexual abuse. Through funding from the Ministry of the Attorney General in partnership with the Family Services of Peel, Central Regions Support Services, SAVIS will run a two-year long pilot. The organization already provides services to both male and female survivors, and with the new funding it will add additional short-term face-to- face and group counselling to male survivors. At SAVIS we provide counselling to survivors that recognizes the wide-ranging long-term effects of sexual abuse such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts, said coun- sellor Ingrid Zollikofer, in a press release. SAVIS already provides free, confidential and non- judgmental support services to males, including a 24-hour crisis line, public education programs, short-term indi- vidual counseling support for fmale partners or friends o female survivors, emergency short-term individual coun- selling support for male survi- vors and referrals to services supporting male survivors. SAVIS is a non-profit char- itable organization working towards ending sexual vio- lence, inequality and oppres- sion in Halton Region. To contact SAVIS, call 905- 825-3622. Fight breast cancer by volunteering at Pink Ribbon Days SAVIS services reach out to men found that the drug exemes- tane reduces their risk of developing the disease by 65 per cent. The second study relates to the treat- ment of breast cancer. Our study found that additional radiation treatment reduc- es risk of reoccurrence for women with early breast cancer, said McDonald. Volunteers are needed to help sell pink ribbons at vari- ous retail locations in Oakville, Burlington and Milton. Shifts are two and three hours in length and are worked in teams of two vol- unteers. This is a great oppor- tunity for students, clubs, teams and church groups. Volunteer site co-ordi- nators are also needed and work with the local office to make sure daffodil sales locations are looked after during the campaign. They will pick up mate- rials from the local office, deliver them to the venue, check in on volunteers throughout the day and will return everything at the end of the day. Site co-ordinators will be assigned a specific loca- tion to look after for the day. Site co-ordinators must have a car in order to participate.
