a store some people find it in teresting for its own sake but for most of us its just the toots we need to do a job A New York computer analyst once said that noone in the world wants a 4 inch drill bit what we want is l inch holes Its the same with com puter hardware- nobody really wants the computer what they want is what the computer can do They want to write letters and play games and balance their accounts All these things belong in the realm of software There are really levels to the computer hierarchy At the top level is you the computer user And at the bottom level is the computer hardware Hardware is tangible you can see it and touch it The middle two levels are oc cupied by software The bottom level of software is the software that actually makes the com puter work This is the software that accepts characters from the keyboard makes the computer beep makes sure the disks are spinning puts the pictures or let ters on the display screen and so on This level of software is called the Operating System It is not really useful software its just what you need to make the com puter go Examples of Operating System software are MSDOS Unix and Xenix The second level of software the top level is the useful soft ware the stuff you use to actual ly accomplish anything This layer is called application soft ware Games word processors spreadsheet programs airline reservation systems all these are examples of application soft ware When youre purchasing a com puter whether its for the home or for the office consider applica tion software first This is where you decide what you really want the software to do what you want to achieve with your com puter Then find out what plat form or foundation that ap plication software needs This platform will be a combination of hardware and operating system software For most home ap plications the platform will be a combination of hardware and operating system software made by Apple or Commodore or Atari Or it will be PCcompatible hardware with MSDOS as the operating system MSDOS is operating system software that will only run on PCs and com patibles We discussed what PCs and clones and com patibles were a few weeks ago In the coming weeks and mon ths well have the chance to look at a number of different kinds of software and well see all the things you can achieve with your computer PRECHRISTMAS SALE now
