Page THErtERALTDOVrLOOK Saturday November 1990 Environment Environmentalist leaves valuable legacy Many readers may have known John Alexander as a Caledon councillor or a member of the Niagara Escarpment Commis Some of you probably read a column that John wrote for Envirosense that appeared on June 1990 on the importance of becoming involved Still others may have heard him speak in April at POWER s Earth Day celebration John died recently and all who work to protect the environment are deeply saddened Anyone who met him could not help but be touched by his good humour and warm manner Less well known is the work that John Alexander was doing to protect the escarpment John had worked to bnng the escarpment ICE meeting Incineration Counteracts the Environment ICE will be holding a public meeting to discuss various environmental issues Nov 26 30 p at Holy Rosary School in Milton Guest speakers include local Halton Hills environmentalist Diane Vandevalk and Michael of the Toronto group Citizens for a Safe Environment to the attention of UNESCO and took great satisfaction on seeing it named a Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations The Niagara Escarpment is recognized as one of the world s natural wonders The escarp ment is that dates back to million years to a time when the area lay under a shallow warm sea Now this is known geologically as the Michigan Basin The outer rim of the saucer is the escarpment edge In Ontario there are more than sites of geological significance including some of the best exposures of rocks and fossils of tbe Silurian and cian Period million Larson John founded the Niagara Escarpment Alliance to en courage the preservation of the escarpment in the United States as well as in Ontario Last sum he took his holiday time to travel to New York Michigan and Wiscon sin to promote the alliance Prof Meeker of Brock University John Minns from Glen ams David Hughes from Caledon and John Alexander s son Jay play to carry on with that project By his example of persistence in spite of ill health John Alex ander inspires others to work for the protection of what is tant Others must now take up the torch so that the gains that John made will not be lost John Alexander supported amendment No 52 which removes waste disposal or management as a permitted utility in the Niagara Escarp ment lands The Niagara Escarp ment public hearing for that amendment will begin on December 3rd 10 am at Halton Hills Civic Center Naturalists Bruce Trail members and all who love the escarpment should sup port the amendment and attend the hearing You can
