THE HERALD Wednesday November School News- GDHS report Commencement this Friday By MARK TUFFORD Today Wednesday mid term report cards will be sent home with students as opposed to being maild directly to parents or guar dlans The reason for this is that the town postal office is re routing all in town mail through This is a very issue as the student calendar was sent in the mail at the beginning of the school year states that reports were to be mailed to homes on Nov and some students might miss seeing their progress COMMENCEMENT This Friday last years graduates from GDHS will return one more time to officially graduate from school and say goodbye to some teachers and friends as they move on in life Some students won be return mg to the school for commence ment due to other commitments mostly college and university With exams in university being scheduled in and around the same general time as the com smart students are staying at university to study for the all important mid terms pass them and maybe make a name for themselves in the workforce when they graduate from college or university The fact that some students won t be showing up t dampen any spirits though I sure that commencement will be just as exciting as it was in previous years and will be ex citing in the many years to come PIE THROW Last Friday student council organized a pie throw which rais ed money for the United Way By m has been rais for the United Way school principal raised of that total by having two pies thrown in his face Par ticipants in the pie throw those having pies thrown at them High School was an experience we will all remember None of us have foreseen this but we all learned a lot that week We survived the cold damp ness the smell of rancid burning wood and the rough ground which all helped to contribute to insomnia Mr our principal would yell the Call each day The sound of his voice echo ing through the camp became pretty normal after the first two nights Evening activities were the highlights for the students The songs around the the laughter among fnends and the big family feeling generated lots of warmth The hardest part of the four days however was getting up for in the great outdoors eating dry cereal and then runn to our various groups By noon on each day we were all dead on our feet as we shared stories of how our mornings had gone Before we knew it that booming voice was echoing again Come on gang back to the routine we went After dinner the traditional Enter The Closet Just what is the closet at Ac ton High Schoo Is it somewhere where errant students are sent when their classroom social skills are not up to snuff Is it a place where the administration lurks waiting to jump out at unsuspecting students It very well could be all of these things but in reality it is the tuck shop a small unassuming room run by a handful of com mitted or soon tobe commit ted students These tireless entrepreneurial waifs dole out generous helpings of candy chips and other sundry items to meet the needs of the stu dent population Besides providing a service to the young academic wayfarers in the institute there are many ad vantages for those who volunteer to do the work Business skills organizational skills com mumcation skills are a few of the major areas where students have an to develop themselves As well money raised from the sale of food products and other supplies paper pens erasers binders goes towards student council activities and worthwhile causes such as environmental The Closet is a valuable part of the high school community for everyone at Acton High School PS The Closet does little to help Pump up the Valium at Acton but it does go a long way in helping to Pump up the Spirit Catholic School Board fetes childrens Book
