life I says Barbara Gyles a volunteer delivering meals in her own com as well as serving as dent of Meals on Wheels of Ontario Assisting people to maintain their dignity and independence in their own homes ib a worthwhile tive she feels Last year volunteers across Ontario actively shared this philosophy They showed their con for their neighbours by delivering 2 hot nourishing meals to clients who are not as mobile as they once were Acton Social Services and In formation Centre is part of this provincial network which grows larger each year The Acton Cen has 55 volunteers in the com who give 500 hours each year Meals on Wheels Week is celebrated annually to recognize these dedicated volunteers who deliver a cheery Good afternoon Meals on Wheels How are you today with each meal Meals on Wheels support is often for a short term period because a person is convalescing but it can be for longer periods This could be the case for someone caring for a spouse who has Disease The assurances that they will receive a hot nutritious meal five days a week lifts the burden of planning shopping and prepara tion and may extend by months or even years the length of time the Alzheimer s patient can be main tamed at home It Is evident from demographic projections that the need for Meals on Wheels in communities is only going to escalate The provincial government has recognized this fact by instituting a Long Term Care Reform to the social service system in Ontario Volunteers and staff of Acton Social Services and Information Centre have attended the forum cosponsored by the MmiBtry of Health and the Ministry of Community and Social Services outlining plans to utilize available resources and assess what is needed the future We know that Meals on Wheels is con an integral part of this planning for inhome services The biggest challenge to meeting the growing need in Acton is to maintain the volunteer component It is this factor that makes Meals on Wheels special This requires the commitment and dedication of local citizens The Acton Centre has issued an invitation to the people in the com munity to join in bringing warmth into a neighbour life It is a satisfying leisuretime pursuit is the general feeling of our current volunteers Many feel they get back much more than they give Some businesses encourage their employees to give up a lunch hour periodically to deliver Meals on Wheels they in turn give the employee the extra time it may re quire This enables a full time worker to be actively involved with hisher community The company benefits the employee benefits and the community benefits For more Information contact Acton Social Services and In formation Centre 5198533310 SEPTEMBER 9th A Fair To Remember FRIDAY SEPTEMBER YOUTH NIGHT m Midway Opens 7
