THE HERALD June Page LETTERS- opposes condos Reader burning over tax bill 1 is where we the k Editors note The following let ter to Halton Hills planning direc tor Ian Keitii was filed with the Herald for publication Re Application for Rezoning Lot Concession Halton Hills Georgetown Ontario Proposed Condominium Development Dear Mr Keith I wish to protest In the strongest possible terms and to formally go on record to state my opposition to the application made to the Town of Hills by and Ontario Ltd in their request to make to The Official Plan Section 78 and to the Zoning Bylaws and This proposal for a condominium development on this site is com pletely inappropriate in our park area an area that is quietly proud of its place in our community This is an area that is used by the whole town an area where we all share the Civic Centre the fairgrounds schools library parks and chur ches This exploitation of the com munity in search of profits is un conscionable and I believe that the town council and the planning department have a responsibility to the public to not allow our town to be raped by developers As of now there seems to be a lack of regard for planning in both the short and long term which I believe demands a special resilience and resourcefulness to control Perhaps more importantly our success will demonstrate that many hundreds of people speaking with one voice can be a challenge to those developers who cause us so much stress and mental anguish and are quite confident before they buy property that they can change an established area that has zoning status to R4 zoning status I object to this blatant disregard for our community and as a resident of 39 years paying level taxes for 26 years I have a right to protest Dr Ball Georgetown 800 shock Editors note The following let ter was filed with The Herald for publication Dear Mr Miller While attending an evening recital at the John Elliott Theatre I was shocked to discover that an parking ticket had been plac ed on my windshield at 840 pm I noticed similar tickets on several other cars I have resided in Georgetown for 35 years and never imagined that the parking meters were operating after in the evening I do not know of another community where this ridiculous annoyance exists I encourage others to inform the council and BIA Business Im provement Assoc that the revenue collected during the even ing hours could not possibly be worth this harassment Sincerely BrendaSisnett Georgetown Dear Sir I have just finished writing a cheque to the township for the taxes and I am still burning I know some who are simply not paying at this time as they cannot afford it and of course they will have to pay interest Which brings me to my first point Are the dates of payment deliberately designed to incur penalty interest June 27 and Sept 26 coincide with nothing in the working peoples world As both dates fall on a Wednesday they do not help the weekly wage earner Worse the dates are a killer for those paid monthly Twentyseven days have gone by since your last cheque and this tax bill saluting our politicians and school trustees extravagance sits waiting to be paid from an empty checking ac count So to add insult to injury many are going to pay interest on top of this grossly inflated tax bill A second point is the delightful news from our local Hydro that our bill is to increase by 15 Mr general manager informs us that the increase of due to inflation and power cost increases plus Mr Wilsons seven per cent will encounter no opposition from the Ontario Energy Board as It is within the provincial guidelines Mr Crow continues to bludgeon us with high interest rates to get in flation below five per cent and from government and their fellow travellers comes a nonstop flow of defeating price increases A third point for this report is the No Fault Insurance Plan I thought this was going to reduce costs Not so as the costs are going up a minimum of 8 per cent with the governments blessing But I digress and the local scene is where we the local population can watch and criticize the spen ding habits of politicians and trustees Be watchful Be vigilant We can get local increases down to the cost of living Morrow Nerval Town needs vision Dear Editor The proposed highrise con dominiums on Maple Avenue should not concern just the people in the immediate neighborhood This development highlights an issue affecting all Georgetown citizens Namely what will our town look like in the future I like many others am alarmed and horrified at the prospect of Georgetown being massdeveloped like our neighbouring communities of Brampton and Mississauga Farmland and green space con tinue to be eaten up clearing the way for highrises industrial parks strip malls and houses In most cases the houses which stretch as far as the eye can see are tighly crammed together One gets the impression mat if the developers could have stacked them one on top of the other they would have done so If you dont believe this is hap pening to Georgetown look at the development south of Hungry Hollow and travel to the empty hole on Maple Avenue where one of Georgetowns older homes was demolished to make way for a con dominium Right now Georgetown is a charming town with few traffic problems little crime clean air and space to breathe it in Do we really want to change this Georgetown does not have to become a minimetropolis If you too are concerned about Georgetowns future please make it known We must act now if we want sensible and controlled development Write the mayor Call your councillor Join the grow ing band of citizens opposing these developments Make it known that developers are not the only ones with a vision for Georgetown Sincerely Michele Fisher rural and semi rural areas While the incidence of the diagnosed animal rabies In Halton is low when compared with the rest of Ontario there is no room for com placency There are certain simple basic precautions we can all take to reduce the risk of exposure to the disease These are Have your dogs and cats against rabies by your local veterinarian Keep dogs and cats on a leash Dont pet or pick up
