reluctantly relinquished the HaUon Closed Badminton team champion ship to E C High School of Milton at the Halton Closed chain tournament staged last Thursday April at Lester B Pearson High School in Burlington The Rebels had won two con secutive Helton Closed badminton crowns and were gunning for their third straight an fourth in five years It was not to be however as E C Drury nipped the Rebel con tingent on points 22 to claim the championship silver award It is disappointing to lose the championship said coach Mavis ONeill but on the plus side it is encouraging to see the overall improvement in the calibre of play especially from the East Halton league standpoint The Halton Closed champion ships were limited to strictly high school trained athletes not af filiated with any clubs The Open championships are scheduled for this coming day again at Lester Pearson High School in Burlington and clubaffiliated athletes can com pete From this point on the provincial championships scheduled for the May weekend at a Toronto location individual and doubles competitiotf takes over from school team competi tion On the bright side the Rebels did qualify six competitors for the Halton Open event With only the top four in each category advancing to the Open competition Melanie Jans was second while Cindy Kallo cap tured third place in the Ladies Singles category According to coach ONeill it is doubtful that Jans will be able to compete in the Clos ed tournament because of squash championship committments Mike Bosnian and Chris Cam bouns placed second in Mens Doubles and advanced to the Open championships Also advancing to the Open event is the Rebels Mixed Doubles team of Julie Purvis and David Scida The Ladies Doubles team of Kel ly Cotton and Shern Nairn placed fifth in their event and wont be making the Halton Open trek Only the top four individuals and doubles teams advance to the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Con ference championships from the Open event The tournament Is scheduled for April 27 at Redeemer College in Hamilton the top two individuals and doubles teams earn the right to compete for provincial honors The B C Bowler of the Year Championships are taking place in the bouse round to qualify com for the zone and provincial rounds There is a Bowler of the Month declared for each of the months of September October December January February and March in the Bantam Junior and Senior divisions These are chosen whether boys or girls mostly based on with other outstanding scoring achievements also taken into count during that month In the peewee section the finalists were Michael Richard Gordon Everett Gordon Clarke Brendan Louth Sara Pegg and Ken Vidler Georgetown Bowler of the Year honor was won by Brendan Louth with a two game plus The runner up is Richard Gostlm with a plus The bantam division winner was Andrew Terrell with a plus of and Stuart Scotford as the runner up The junior section shaped up as a battle between Robm Zander and David Leslie with Geoffrey Beauparlant sniping at their heels The first game gave Leslie the lead with a plus 68 followed by Beauparlant plus 55 and Zander plus Then in the second Zander rolled a to pull In front of everyone with plus 164 Leslie fell back down with plus 89 and plus However in the last game David Leslie came through with a 233 game for a total plus 159 while
