volleyball team kept alive hope for a first place regular season finish in the Eastern Division of the Halton Senior Girls Volleyball League by nipping a feisty Bishop Reding Royals team 1513 and 1512 in a match played last Thursday at GDHS Bishop Reding Royals entered the Rebels lair in a virtual deadlock with Georgetown for se cond place in the league s stan dings but the GDHS win left only the Rebels and OakvilleTrafalgar High School to contest first place honors The Rebels hosted OTHS day afternoon at GDHS at press time the results were not Jonathan Allan gains experience While 18yearold Jonathan Allan and his partner Janice Morgan didn t skate off with championship laurels at the Canadian Figure Skating championships held last weekend in Sudbury the ex penence should stand the Novice Pairs team in good stead in future competitions Allan of Hornby a 14year member of the Georgetown Figure Skating Club and his partner Morgan of the Barne Figure Skating Club placed 13th overall in the Long Program and overall in the Original program in the duos first appearance in the limelight of national competition The couple placed fifth overall in the Eastern Canadian Divisionals championships to qualify for the Nationals It was a great learning ex said Allan and I sure will both benefit from the competition The couple s immediate plans in terms of competition are still in the talking stage but Allan said he and his partner will continue to skate as a team and with one more year of Novice Pairs competition still ahead of them strive to lm prove and impress in the highly competivt Pairs category available The winner would enjoy home court advantage in league playoffs scheduled to get under way this week Against the spirited and smaller Royals the team is composed mainly of junior players the Rebels never appeared com fortable and t get a flow go ing to their game until it was almost too late serves less than perfect sets and some defensive confusion added to the GDHS woes His team s less than cohesive showing didn impress Rebel head coach Bevin Clark who held a team meeting immediately after the match Obviously understated Clark we were not on top of our game Especially in the area of serving You have to serve well to win and it just wasn t there today In the se cond game won by Milton 159 we were successful in only per cent of our serves The Rebels looked shaky in their first game win and in fact the game was tied before the GDHS squad pulled it out of the bag The Royals obviously took en couragement from this and ran up a second game lead before set tling for Royals rallied however and moved front before Rebel pride took over GDHS surged to a lead and withstood a Royal rally with the score 1412 to pull out the final game 1512 win Jen Irwin and Julie Ross were Rebel mainstays in the match that easily could have been decided in Bishop Reding favor The Rebels also took part in a team tournament held at University in Hamilton over the weekend and placed se cond in their pool only to be eliminated by Anderson High School of Scarborough who plac ed first in Pool in playoff round action Cave had an- outstanding tournament and received her team s Heart
