800 lent vocal support to Greens heroics Green made 48 saves against the West Divisions second place team some of them of the spectacular variety Greens defensive heroics were backed by the offensive pro duction of Brent and Chris had a six point night while matched that total with two goals and four assists Raiders next home game Is scheduled for Jan 12 8pm at Gordon Memorial Arena against Brampton Capitals Herald photo Hats off to Raiders Derbys bowled over by Georgetown By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Georgetown Pontiac Buick Raiders came up with perhaps their best performance of the year last Thursday evening at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena defeating the visiting Streetsville Derbys before a crowd estimated at over Atom House League fans the largest crowd by far of the season Gibbons and Walinga pace team to victory Stephen Gibbons and Michael Walinga each collected hat tricks in pacing Vanan to an win over JimPat in a Georgetown Minor Hockey Association Atom House League game played Satur day J T and Jason Water worth rounded out the scoring for the winners Cameron Hunter picked up two Broomball tournament scheduled It is time again for the annual Halton Hills Outdoor Tournament This year tourna ment will be held Feb 3 from 30 am to at the Georgetown Fairgrounds This is a mixed tournament and is purely for fun so sign up now The deadline for registration is Jan 19 but registration is limited so make sure you submit the entry form and the entry fee right away The injury waiver can either be sent in with your registration or brought along on the day of the tournament assists while Michael Walinga and Joshua Malinoski had single helpers for Vanan Shawn scored three times for JimPat Akers with Aaron adding two markers and picking up three assists Shaun Dunlop had two assists with Trevor Crane collecting a single assist Denis Paulin played an excellent game in the JimPat nets In another GMHA Atom House League game Paul Farmer Warren Evans and Glen were the marksmen as Dave s Service edged Rockwell Stewart Houston had a pur of assists for the winners with Ryan Boudreau Warren Evans Calvin Jimmie and Glen picking up single assists Stewart Houston and Jason Myers played strong games for Dave s Service Kyle Hancock t be faulted his efforts in the losing cause as he scored all three of the Rockwell goals Sam Southworth and Richard Hennessey notched assists In the hard fought contest Sam Southworth stopped numerous enemy rushes as well as con to the Rockwell attack The evening was designated as Kids Nite as the Raiders in con junction with the Georgetown Minor Hockev Association and sponsoring merchants in Hills had prizes galore for youngsters with luck ticket numbers The Raiders saved the best prize for last however turning in a performance that rated reviews Everybody came to play noted an pleased Raider coach Peter Sturgeon It was an excellent team effort all round Raiders needed the type of team effort Sturgeon has seen only sionallv thus far in the tral Ontario Junior B Hockey League West Division season as the Derbys waltzed into Georgetown sporting the West Division second best overall record just four points behind Oakville Derbvs As well were points better than the Raiders the West Dim standings An excellent effort by Curtis Green in the Raiders nets seemed to inspire the Raiders throughout the first period and into se cond period play There was little to choose bet ween the two teams with Raiders holding the slight edge in play The Georgetown squad led after minutes of play and moved in front 20 eight minutes into the second period Strong play in their own end combined with some tenacious forechecking in the Streetsville zone allowed the Raiders the two goal cushion Then as had happened to the Raiders so often this season the Raiders got off their game and Streetsville mounted a comeback Raiders were by the Derbys in the second period to knot the game at threeall heading into the final period of play A v v Raiders reverted to their earlier game form in the third period and hard work in the Streetsville end resulted in what proved to be the game winning goal with just under five minutes to in the contest The final two Raider goals were scored into an empty net as Streetsville pulled out all the stops in a fruitless effort to get back into the game While Sturgeon had well desened praise for all his charges several plavers stood head and shoulders above the rest Raider scoring leader Brent Presswood had one of those magical nights where the puck ap peared glued to his stick like a magnet He scored three times and pick ed up three assists Chris Lazarowff turned in stellar performance twice and collecting four assists Rob Doucette rounded out the Raiders scoring while Jason Stewart had a strong game not ching three assists The player of the game for the Raiders however was Green who made saves some of the spec vanety and continually stymied the snipers when the visitors threatened to get back into the game Central Otit Jr B Raiders deadlock Capitals COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Georgetown Buick Raiders followed up their strong effort from the previous evening against Streetsville Derbys by bat tlmg Brampton Capitals to a tie a Central Ontario Junior B League West Dmsion con test Friday night at Gordon Memorial Arena The tie against the visibng Capitals gave the Raiders three out of a possible four points to close out 1989 on a positive note The win over Streetsville Der Thursday evening coupled with the 66 deadlock with Bramp ton Friday night raises the Raiders season record to a slightly more respectable 1 heading into the portion of the Central Ontario Junior B Hockey League schedule The Raiders benefitted once again from a strong performance in the nets by Curtis Green who faced 54 enemy shots and turned aside The bulk of the Raiders offence was earned by John Williamson who potted a hat tnck The game was scoreless after the first as both Green and Brampton Steve Thorpe frustrated the respective gunners from both teams Raiders led 2 after the second then left Green virtualh defenceless in the third frame as he faced 30 shots in that penod alone as Brampton scored four times with three replies from the Raiders to end the contest tied at Brent BUI McDonald and Lazarowff rounded out the Raiders McDonald was a force to be con tended with throughout the game as he also collected three assists Raiders opened 1990 season on the road with a game last Tuesday in Peterborough This Friday Raiders journey to Oakville for a game against the West Division leading Blades Raiders next home game scheduled for Jan 12 at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena against the visiting Brampton Capitals Presswood leads sconng
