Mill St ACTON The world must still struggle to achieve real peace By REV FRITZ Lutheran Church Headline Many are becoming concerned at recent developments as the world seems to be headed for more peaceful times As tions between the superpowers are more relaxed and east European governments are changing over night to more democratic forms there is increased concern about increased prospects for peace throughout the world No you re not likely to see such a headline in most newspapers In fact it more likely that you will read about the current events in Europe with an air of hopefulness There will be statements made about people coming closer to the grand ideal of being able to live together in peace It s an idea which Is very popular at this time of the year especially since this time is supposed to be connected to celebrating the birth of One who is called the Prince of Peace Yet Jesus and His disciples ac warn about being misled and confused with a situation like the one we now see St Paul warned about being misled by peace when he wrote to a congregation in Macedonia that was having trouble with the idea of when the world would end and what would happen at that time He wrote While peo ple are saying Peace and safety destruction will come on them The problem is how is the peace reached and how long could we expect such a peace to last While we look at how much bet ter the major nations of the world can get along we may forget about the other areas of the world or even our own communities where peace is not apparent Then our senses are rocked by the way one man can disturb and destroy the peace of not just one community but a nation even the continent with his rage And when we hear such stones we seek immediately for an answer a way to prevent such a tragedy from happening How could the government restrain the actions of people who would disturb the peace of others Would peace be assured if it was more difficult to obtain weapons of any sorf Is it possible to iden tify troubled people soon enough and care for them properly before they cause trouble for others There will be answers to these questions from time to time even some that may seem to work in most cases After all the world leaders making headway in their area of responsibility Surely we can hope for something better in our own neighborhoods Yet despite all the progress we will make towards peace and despite the success of efforts to stop disturbed individuals from disturb ing the peace of others peace will not be permanent as long as it is at tempted from the human side through human means Real peace will come when it is firmly and finally established bet ween us and God That is where the Prince of Peace comes in His birth alone is not really what makes for peace but His birth combined with His life death and resurrection In giving His sinless divine life for us sinful mortal beings Jesus sealed a peace treaty between us and God which has the ability to be ex tended between us and other peo ple If we work for peace in any other way we may have it only til we are called before God to count for our lives But with Christ as our negotiator and mediator we can have peace our own cons cience now and when we leave this life Heti the warning Look for the peace that is reliable and durable the one that Christ Jesus has won for us with God House Gallery 115 MAIN ST S
