the HERALD Home Newspaper of Hills Established 1 866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown Ontario GARNET Publisher General J Advertising Manager 1V Page A TUb Wednesday October IDSj Shocking report Shelter it s one of our most basic necessities But a shocking report on emergency shelter reveals just how many are left homeless unable to find a place to stay if only for a short period of time The Halton Social Planning Council s report in that only 52 per cent of requests for shelter on a temporary basis were accommodated We think of Halton as for the most part an affluent region But these statistics tell a different story The region and other areas across Canada just in kept up with the growing number of peop sition In Halton the problems are compound haven kept up with the growing number of people in tran sition In Halton the problems are compounded by lack of low cost housing available the It s distressing to find that many of the requests for emergency shelter come from youths under years with no dependents and who are either unemployed or students How sad it is for those so young in life to be without hope of even finding a roof over their shoulders when times get rough The report notes that in Halton Hills there were a proportionately higher number of requests for emergency shelter from those married over 25 years seniors and disabled The results clearly show we need more low cost housing and more emergency shelters to help our homeless Its a horse race So now its a horse race Mike Armstrongs announcement that he 11 run for mayor has put some life into our municipal election Not since former Mayor Peter Pomeroy ran against then incumbent Tom Hill in 1978 have we seen a good two way fight for the mayors seat Each of the candidates are experienced in political life and they both have their own band of followers For the first time both will be going outside their Ward boundaries to canvass the entire town Miller owes his support to his Ward 2 constituents while Mike Armstrong was voted in by Ward Georgetown West and South Unless one of these can didates chooses to take a stand on the issues which is dif ferent from his opponent voters may be confused Weve heard at least one candidate in the municipal election race say everyone agrees on what the solutions to the issues are If thats the case it will be a fight for the mayor s seat based on leadership We d prefer a race based on what our candidates say they will do for the town and hopefully it wont be a broken record Nevertheless we re happy for a twocandidate race Its nice to know we have options when casting our votes Made for families proof Is the natural love of parents for their children children for their parents and brothers and sisters for each other This familial love may not always be very apparent But we have all seen it come through when the chips arc down That means that a person is best cured for in the family and by the family No government no social agency can care as much about person Therefore no government or agency can care as well for the If families functioned as they should most social agencies could close their doors forever This is a sinful world and not all families will function as they should There will still be a need for agencies to help people on our behalf the more families do the less government will have to do The more you do for your family and the more your family does for you the less Ihe possibility that your family will need help from some social agency What can be done to strengthen the family That is a private matter We should all do what we can to improve our own families That takes time and thought and effort One thing you can do is to start going is a family to a church that really stresses what the Bible teaches The Bible is big on family life and good for family life It makes It clear that the church is always to underglrd never to undermine family life Wc sin often against those closest to us We have more opportunities to hurt hem than anyone else The best the church has to offer the family Is the Gospel the message of the forgiveness of sins Tor Jesus sake God s forgive moves us to forgive one another That Is a tremendous boost family Clergy By Ml JOIINM Lutheran Church Moment in Peking by Lin is one of the loveliest novels I have ever read It portrays with great beauty the importance of the family as an something to say all of us The building blocks of society are not individuals but families Each of us should put family before self- and also before the slate Anything that lends to break up family Is dangerous and detrimental to all of society Any society thai breaks up families Is being suicidal Strong families mean strong persons in a vital society Weak families mean weak persons In a dying society Why Because we are made for family life There are exceptional individuals who can live well alone But most of us were not meant to live that way Neither were we made be Interchangeable pieces in a vast machine like totalitarian society The family or small clan is the largest group that can really take the needs of specific persons into account in dec id what Is best for all The proof is human sexuality and the procreation of children Sexual activity Is completely Irresponsible except between a man and a woman committed to caring for each other and for their children That means marriage and family life The sand pile became a city Two young boyi built up First cm tie then the moat Finally forests began to erupt The occurrence with the in Lime house This last round fruitless efforts over negotiating site pi in far Auto Wreckers has again been won by Mr Tolton and lost by the villagers of I is worried about Mr Tolton properly rights and legal problems that from poss council action that no one seems worried about the rights of he citizen at all As longaswc pay our taxes land the councillors salaries everyone should be happy Might Wrong Several weeks ago at the council meeting It seemed as though the council had finally found teeth by enforcing tht plan the deadline of Sept J for Mr to move his fence back approximately three feet from where it was Mr lowyer Mr Page was at the meeting to express his client views and he requested the following things the date to move the fence back be extended lo Sept JO ifflo to accommodate Mr and staff while the yard was closed for I last two weeks of August while moving fence back Mr Tolton would like to extend the fence on the east by approximately reel and add a triangular portion on the west to keep his snow in if allowed to do these list two Items Mr to show good faith would move the fence by 15 19B5 These requests of Mr Page on behalf Of his client ore totally unncces nary lo operation of Mr business I don I know of too many other businesses that need to fence their snow In I think It is just another trumped up excuse to park more cars outside and to push the council to set will let Mr Tollon bend the low However the bottom line of thlh fiasco is yet to unfold Apparently the original site plan that voted to accept and enforce could not be enforced because Mr Tolton did not sign it so a new site plan was established that gave In to Mr on all requests This technical oversight is just the latest in a long tine of Ihese oversights when the council and the bylaw enforcement officer have been dealing with this situation In yet another scenario Mr Tolton was taken to court on the bylaw Infringements for operating the yard after hours as specified In the bylaws The court date was set for Sept Justice of the Peace saw lit to deny a request to hold over the e lie until month so that a key witness would be to testify Our Shier happen to he teaching could not get on thit date but would have no trouble making the October appear In an effort to try lo solve this on going problem Ihc council needs lie of councillors who do not seem to care about their jobs those who have an attitude that implies they will fence sit to avoid legal and possible rights infringe ments those who do not know mi am lit of the word accountability do have some councillors who have been trying clear up this situation I glad to sec hot they arc for re election I am dismayed it the incumbents who arc planning run il em most for higher office who do not based on whit I have seen of their performances at the council meetings deserve to be reelected The bluest problem with some of the council members is that they view heme i council member as a way to well known their picture in the paper or boost their own self esteem times It seems as hough Ihe councillors forget who they are working for I hive been reading with great interest the campaign promises of the local There is a common line that runs through most of them Most of the feel that the to be elected to ensure the propel development of Georgetown South ind West I for one hope that these people get their collective acts together for these velopmcnts for the most part to date llicy are not seeing to the proper resolution of this situation In Lime- house I would like to ask voters of deorgelown not to be apathetic in this next election and not vote No one is immune to the actions or Inaction of the council help us elect some people who will work for those who elected There is still an intolerable situation in 1 I would like thank the councillors who have been trying to help us in this battle Sincerely Susan Cox No parking barrier for the handicapped lie Sir the request of sever patrons we hive been asked to make an innouiiccmtnt through the press to inform people thai Is no longer poss hie irk on Church St in front of I ibrary Metered parking is available across the street but the municipality has declared the Library side a No Parking zone At time this was proposed 1 try Hoard protested the changes on the grounds that library staff and patrons arc already woefully short of parking space and new restrictions would inevitably push more parking on to Market St to the probable fury of residents there who have difficulty accessing their own driveways for the handicapped the no park zone renders the use of the ramp significantly more difficult producing She felt like a Star Dear Sir Thank you for the newspaper article on Anne nil enjoyed It and Anne
