the HERALD Homa Newspa of Halton Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guolph Street Georgetown Ontario L7G and Manager PHONE J Advertising Manager Reg fane A Wednesday Jane 1985 July last chance to voice concerns Its your last chance to comment Halton Hills town councillors were in a conciliatory mood last Monday Under the weight of mounting op position and discouraged by lack of citizen participation at meetings councillors delayed a vote on a recently com Transportation Study Instead they arranged for a public meeting July to give the public a chance to digest the final report and make comments to council It was a fair move by council The year study af f ects many residents who live in Georgetown and area To adequately voice their concerns the public needs time to read the document and form questions for the authors of the report Two previous public meetings were not well ded by residents and this leads us to two conclusions Either people didnt know about the meetings or they didnt care A third consideration is that people dont know how the Transportation Study affects them Perhaps the most controversial proposal in the study is the development of the Ninth Line Road South as a major highway into Georgetown This decision could change the face of Georgetown South creating the potential for more trucks more speeding vehicles and additional hazards for children Many people want growth in Georgetown and we count ourselves among them But let s not planners and consultants have the final say on what Georgetown wants in the way of future expansion and development The process allows for citizens to comment and criticize If you want input in the process voice your views Julys Antiburgher church Linked Esquesing with Vermont By RICHARD In the Scotch Block there was once tin Anil burgher church One of about half a doen congregations In Upper Canada I wondered how It came to be There are accounts of visits by American preachers in he 1820s but It was in Esquesing that one of the few churches was formed Those members I have been able to identify trace their roots toavarlelyofScotllshshircs But a nucleus seemed to have spent some years In the Vermont towns of and on the New Hampshire As I filled in the family trees of other members they were usually linked somewhere by marriage to these Scotch American families So the next step was to trace what could be discovered of the link between Esques I rig and Burnet Much of the Scotch settlement there had resulted from the activity of the numerous emigration societies of the period In 1772 a meeting was held at in Renfrewshire which led to he organization he fallowing year of the Scotch American Company far purchasing lands in any of His Majesty Dominions Inspired by the Holy Spirit it is the source of saving ruth fulfilled in Jesus Christ Christians take heir cue for faith and life from this source and so also from this word The fear of the Lord is hcbeginningof wisdom For them this word Is rich with implications for all of lire It is one those words from the Bible thai very significantly has bearing on every relationship in life Moreover it provides the direction for every responsibility The expression the fear of the Lord is one that is frequently crstood and misused Fomotalcwth expression sounds uninviting toothers Guest comment it is unacceptable and unworthy It is felt that God the Lord is a person or being of whom we better are afraid You never know what he may do to you next In this view the fear of the Lord God is some ever threatening power or influence This sort of thinking and feeling is far from the mark When we listen and read the Bible and what it says on the Tear of the Lord wc get a totally different picture in the fear of the Lord God fully requires that wc respect him He inspires in us a feeling or owe In this Tear he Invites us to seek his help and blessing In turn may rust him completely for his sure promise of salvation Willingly we seek to please him in faithfully and freely following his will Those who fear the Lord enjoy with him a close relationship of trust The fear of the Lord has according to the Bible all these and other Ingredients in This expression also keeps us from considering God as a buddy on overly nice person who answers to our every whim wish and whose arm we can twist at will The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom We have no real wisdom unless have this fear It is highest wisdom to fear the Lord We have not begun to be wise unless the fear of the Lord is Inns To the readers of this column I would commend this fear and Its resulting blessing or I would invite those to share in it if presently they do not do so Among the there are Ihoso who accept this word from he Bible but may be tempted to let go of it If they do the fear of the Lord is Rone Ten year olds pilot project Yugoslav Centre No agreement over noise problem ly HANNAH Herald Special A special who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1933 Amelia Earhart would have made a good combat pilot If she was a Canadian today she have been allowed to fly with the Canadian Armed Forces because of the way her body was built I interviewed two former military pilots and a World War II combat pilot I asked each of them Do you think women should be trained to fly planes in the Canadian Armed Forces They all said Yes Do you think women could work with men as a team in an airplane They all said Yes Do you think that women should be allowed to fly In combat One said Yes One Georgetown Ball Hockey Assoc tat I on and have become Increasingly concerned with the quality of elating in this league In a recent game June 1U of ours the officials exhibited a flippant altitude and complete lack of judge ment Upon completion of the game In question the my players approached referees to ask why they had not been calling penalties involving rough and dangerous ploy Her husband had been injured twice as a result of such incidents and she felt the officials had let game get out of control because of heir tack of judgement The answer given by the officials was that they are not responsible for any injury which occurs during the game player is for ids own safely Continuing one said that if she thought she could do a belter Job of elating then she should go right ahead With this statement referee held his hand with a whistle In It and as the woman reached for the whistle the official pulled his hand away and com men led that he was not the one wearing glasses Her reply was that perhaps if he wore glass this individual might perform his duties more efficiently This official then remarked that he woman was a seven litter noun beginning with the letter a and ending in I realize referees receive a lot of unnecessary abuse from players and coaches and thai hey may use pro fanity when dealing with these individuals But when a spectator has a genuine concern for the safety and well being of both her husband and the rest of the players and she expresses her interest to officials in a reasonable manner there Is absolutely no need and indeed no excuse or justification for Ihe treatment this individual received This type of conduct is becoming to any referee and Is in fact outright ignorance Common sense should prevail as any official is supposed to represent a figure of authority and impartiality As the Instructs referees must be courteous at all times both on and off the Ice they must enforce the rules firmly and impartially rough play strictly this attitude and deplorable behavior per slsls I believe some player will ultimately receive a serious injury Another Important consi deration Is that many of he Individuals and Involved with the GBHA may lose all respect for referees the respect which is an essential element in the successful performance of their officiating duties Under the I feel that the refe ree in question should issue a formal apology to the woman Involved I am also of the opinion that the chief referee should reprimand the individual in some on so as to deter any further incidents Therefore I have forwarded a copy of this letter to the referee of the Georgetown Refe ree Association In the hope that he will act on this matter swiftly and stringently Yours sincerely Robert
