HERALD PROFILE EDITION May IMS Dave Barrager heads up Gemini hockey Four years ago when he first got involved with Georgetown Geminis Dave Barrager never thought he would someday become the teams president That however changed this spring Barrager was elected president after serving in the first vicepresident last year and second vice the year before He said a keen in terest in the game and its players were the keys to his involvement with the Junior club I think there is a certain amount of en joyment in being involved with young men in their hockey career he said I like the fellowship of the other executive members and sitting down with others to raise funds in order to represent the community with a Junior B hockey club As president Barrager said his Include handling trie administration of the hockey team enforcing the constitution and making sure the team runs according to those guidelines He also appoints chairmans for the different commi However Barrager said he will not just be involved in the appointment of jobs to people The president will too take an active role in the work department One of the more pressing issues facing the president now is getting more executive members involved with the hockey club Barrager said there is still room for any in terested parties to get involved A former hockey player in the Georgetown minor Hockey system Barrager said the calibre of junior hockey is really quite high I would say that Junior B hockey is the most exciting and physical league in hockey today It can be a stepping stone to the pros But there is a lot of frustration too Like wanting to do all the things we would like to and not being able to because of not being able to af ford it For example like going on a two hour trip to Barrie and wanting a more comfortable bus or buying inexpensive transportation where the heater doesijt work in the middle of January Annually the Geminis look at a budget of Dave Barrager who is seen sitting front row middle with his Gemini executive has to somewhere near and while that might sound high it comes up short to the or so budgets handled by other teams in the Central Ontario Junior League to which the Geminis belong We are one of the most frugal teams in the league in that we eliminate a lot of waste We try to cut our expenses anyway we can in order to meet the clubs budget Last year the Geminis went with a lot of youth on the ice and had a rebuilding season This year a lot of the players and executives are hopeful the lessons of last year will mean in the playoffs this year run a tight ship in order for the Junior B hockey club to make their budget last These guys young players are coming back as seasoned Junior B players and they know what they are up against now Due to the competitive nature I dont think you can com pare minor hockey to Junior B so those juvenile and new players we got last year needed time to get used to this league When the day comes when Barrager is no longer on the teams executive he said he wont stop helping out wherever he can Id stay on as a past president afterwar ds and Id be willing to work at whatever I was needed at GRANT CLATWORTHY He knows benefits of When Grant Clatworthy considers a new activity for the physical education department at Georgetown District High School he has more to worry about than how it will benefit his specific department Sometimes people have tunnel vision he said The most important thing is the em phasis must be on what is best for the school as a whole Say for example if I want to institute a new program into the physical education department If that program will weaken from three others then maybe not offering it will help the other three Clatworthy has been the depar tment head the past two years He has been a faculty member at the high school the past years His first three years at GDHS the Western taught science as well as physical education For the past seven years he has been mainly a phys ed teacher As the head of his department Clatworthy is in charge of looking after the different curriculum and programs and making sure they are current and up to date He is also responsible for the purchase of equipment materials and also supervises those staff mem bers in his department As well Clatworthy schedules the facilities at the school makes up the time table acts as a liaison between the school teams Student Athletic Association and school itself If that isnt enough he is also a volleyball coach at both the high school in Georgetown and Sheridan College In fact Clatworthy guided the Sheridan Bruins ladies team to an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association title and a fifth place finish at the national championships Needless to say Clatworthy has been a busy man this year It does take a lot of organization but I enjoy it When Clatworthy became the depar tment head he had set some goals which have for the most part been realized or are on the road to being realized I wanted to strengthen the develop the intramural program purse a Coop credit system in phys ed Im happy with how the in- GRANT
