restore it Come on Hills council just give the supporters of the town hall a chance Fridays dropin session was very worthwhile for many reasons but particularly because the Actano Committee proposal to buy rent get the building any way thats acceptable to coun and restore it them selves was made crystal clear It really is a no lose deal for the town If the supporters fall flat on their faces then the town can still tear the building down for an estimated eight parking spaces Basically what the groups want is to be given control of the building in a form of Halton Hills choosing and then a few years in which to restore the outside and inside as well as explore for potential tennants for space in the building Hills doesnt need to give the groups the money set aside for demolition in fact in light of the fact a good number of residents signed petitions against tax dollars going into the building the petition stated they didnt object to the community groups restoring it council shouldnt give the groups any money In addition there is no requirement that the town rent space in the hall However if it should turn out in the years ahead that Halton Hills does need space a restored town hall would be the correct location but it is by no means a certainty space will be needed so Halton Hills shouldnt feel obligated to move into the hall Lastly there shouldnt be any requirement or suggestion that the building once restored be given back to the municipality It could easily remain forever in the hands of the Foundation which will be established to handle Actano money Basically feelings about the town hall fall into three categories One group doesnt want it restored by anyone at any price at any time regard less if their tax dollars go into it or not A larger group doesnt want tax dollars used to restore or maintain the building but really dont care if the Interest groups take a shot at it though these people generally figure the groups wont succeed A third group probably as large as the other two combined and at the hour more sup porters are coming forward want it saved restored and used and dont care who does it or who pays for it in fact these people are willing to work and contribute financially to the project It also reasonable con the fact this commun ity has built other facilities on its own that labor and funds will be donated if the project ever gets a green light Its pretty hard to raise funds for a building many have been led to believe is collapsing and nobody will be allowed to save But really these questions will only be answered if sup porters are given a chance to try and save the building If in two or three years the building hasnt been restored money hasnt been raised volunteers havent come for ward to donate labor etc council can still tear it down What has council got to lose in going for this deal other than the opponents on council who bay Actano and the Restoration Committee cant do it being proved wrong Our readers write Nuke vote editorial rebuttal Dear Sir Your editorial In the A of May 19 Nuke vote may be cosily calls for a rebuttal Its defeatist attitude and putdown or participatory democracy is unworthy of a paper that normally sup ports altruistic Issues The editorial was In response to the AFP front page feature of May 12 Nuclear disarmament may be mimic vote question As one who strong ly supports such a referendum I would like to make the following points 1 You agreed with some Helton Hills councillors that such a plebiscite might Many towns and Cities for example Van Hamilton London Ottawa representing over million Canadians have already opted for such action In the unlikely event that including the question would spoil the ballot It would be a small price to pay for the op portunity to be heard on a vital issue 2 You stale that we fear nuclear war and its terrifying results Tor mankind then make a pessimistic statement about how useless a plebiscltewouldbe It Is such defeatism that cause us lo lose by default If an individual a stand is unimportant why have elections at all Some countries don t YouspeakofUieextracost of such a referendum As compared with the cost of armaments it is negligible The cost of leaving life and death decisions to generals nationalistic leaders and the armaments industries is too to contemplate We mutt not be and dollar foolish A You used the words absurd and laughable to describe the value of a plebiscite because of low voter turnout By this reasoning the election of town councillors Is equally ludicrous Are you suggesting we abolish municipal elections You discount the effectiveness of talks talks and more talks and of any referendum in Halton fills Well talking will always be preferable to fighting especially with nuclear war heads I believe Halton Hills citizens deserve a chance to participate in creating the political will to improve the odds that our children children will live pass judgement on our forth Tightness or our selfdefeating helpless- You say your readers reacted to the referendum dialogue as general ly or a good laugh I choose not to believe that are thai insensitive Many share my view and yours that the possibility of a nu clear war is a reality and an obscenity One of the ironies of history that citizens are usually left out of the Issues that affect them most As a result they feel a sense of helplessness and a neg lect and become indifferent to govern ment The kind of interdependence that is now emerging on this globe Is too 1m portent and complex to be left Inter national bureaucrats alone They are not usually capable of being agents of change Change requires the active of all Yours sincerely Eldon Comfort Beardmore workers going to Ottawa protest On the Sally Smith thinks she and Ernie Marks should receive a citation What for Seems Sally and Ernie rescued a kitten which had got caught in a door and was choking to death last week Quick thinking by Ernie opened the door and The office has been Involved in the life of the community since when it began operations in a village hotel with John Newton serving as the first postmaster The community was once known as Fountain Green but when the post office opened it renamed the village Around 1880 the post office moved to Its present site but in 1888 the building burned down to be replaced by the struc ture now housing it the General Store Mrs Violet Stevens the present post master has held the position since May 1969 WorklngwlthhertsCalMcIntyre the rural route contractor for the area Mrs Stevens is well aware of the history of the post office In Limehouse Theres some pretty good local photo graphers works on display and for sole at the Hide House for the next few weeks Photos by Iva Knechtel BUI Stuckey Jim Jennings Bruce Andrews and Ted Hilton are in the Photography Show and Sale presented by the Acton unit of the Canadian Cancer Society Proceeds of the sale go towards the Canadian Cancer Society Eleven years ago this summer I toured Europe for five weeks with The Canadian Youth Hostels Association Of the many countries I visited my favorite was to surprise Holland And it until recently that I think I discovered why As an excited 16yearold I went over with the Idea of scouting Switzerland as a place to attend university The few days in Holland were Just to be stopover on my way back to England before going home But when I got there to Holland I felt like I bad already arrived home I felt comfortable and although I missed my family terribly I could have spent months in Amsterdam Everything felt very further and saw a derivative of my mothers maiden name Burgess but the spelling had been changed too much to be sure it was from the same name I must be the only person in North America who never saw Roots but after the feeling I got when looking through these old records I might have opened the doors to a new hobby for me Visiting at the home of Ted and on Saturday May 15 was Crown Ambassador Jim Janx of Surrey Jim left teaching to join the ranks of the Am way Corporation lByearsago and now his organization Ambassador Associates has over GO distributors and did a business volume of over million last year He is the present chairman of the Canadian Board of the Distri butors Association and on the Board of Robert Schuller Ministries His visit to Acton was to speak to present and poten tul members of the Hansen Group of his organization There are several local and prominent names in the Crawford Lake fund raising drive list Crawford Lake is so unique that Founds lion hopes to raise in the next three years to preserve this area and rebuild the Indian village which was nearby years ago The lake is so unusual that there may not be another one like it in Southern Ontario Although Acton is in the Credit Valley Conservation the people In this town relate easily to recreation and educational activities at Kelso and Crawford Lake The Foundation Is well organized and has an active committee in Halton Hills which will be contacting local Industries or their support says foundation execu tive member Pat McKenxie Although I have made my donation I feel if the people of Acton read about this project that many local citizens who believe in conservation will want to support the Crawford Lake project The Limehouse Cubs are challenging all cub packs in North to support this worthy project How much more exciting to visit an Indian Village at Crawford Lake than to look at a picture or read about it in a text book at school Pat says Pat had been named chairman of the committee but ill health forced him to ask Miller to take it over Other local names are Mrs K Mrs Dolly Mrs Debbie Vlnce Whelan Ross Knechtel Edith and John Micnie MEANDERINGS by Mabel Barbecued Steak centre Then place it on a board and slice diagonally very thin Its amazing how far this will go Serve with a salad and baked potatoes or make hot beef sandwiches with crusty rolls Salt and Pepper afterwards so that the meat will not toughen Unless there are new developments in the battle lo have Ottawa reinstate leather shoe import quotas almost management personnel and workers are going to be bussed to Ottawa for a rally on June B on Partia Hill Workers at Beardmore said two buses have been chartered to take workers to Parliament Hill where unions tanners and shoe manu facturers will be protesting the lifting of quotas Fred of HeUera said there are no plans at this time to send people from that firm to the rally Last month when I was Interviewing Rockwood historian Joseph and the who are doing a book on the history on their homeland in Holland I told them how much I loved Holland A flip of a few of their historic archives showed that the Levels a derivative of my maiden name lived in centuries ago in fact hod originated from Baexem The tax rolls indicate my great great great great I dont know how many grandfather was the church sexton I was really surprised to hear of the Dutch connections in my past as I thought my fathers family came from Germany or France I looked through the archives Outdoors BYLOBNE FLETCHER Outdoor camping and fishing In the rain have some good points such as fewer black flies and mosquitos to contend with Of course who got soaked and in some place hopelessly stuck in the mud on the past long weekend would probably argue the point It seems the Pickerel wake up and go on the prowl for lunch just when a storm Is breaking On Saturday past after falling to findany fish until p m when the rains started suddenly action picked up and shortly thereafter we had fish in the canoe Theres nothing like a pan full of Pickerel fillets plus a pot full of fiddle head ferns both free and in abundance this time of year Rainbow trout have noticeably slowed down in the most central and southern regions with Just a few late season being taken These fish are not worth the effort as they are in poor condition after pawning and should be left alone or released for another year Some good catches of Splake and Rainbow are reported from Colpoy Bay at Wtarton and Owen Sound harbor where quite a few Chinook Salmon two to five pounds bare been landed A local fisherman Ivor Trowbridge and a party of two town fishermen have just retailed from a well plumed trip to the Western area of Ontario with great catch After eating well on their trip they brought home something like nine Lake Trout two Speckled trout up to four half pounds plus ten large Pickerel Those large Speckled Trout alone would make most anglers sit up and take notice Mr Trowbridge is one angler who really plans his fishing trips well in advance right down to the lost detail of tackle and destination Usually this type of planning pays off In good angler success plus he satisfaction or holiday time well spent Tanya was a successful and happy angler recently While fishing the River she landed a four pound Pickerel plus more fish the next day Many anglers from the Acton area regularly fish this river George and Barbara Forest and family Viola Foster and brother Kenny have been trying their luck there This river Is known for its fickleness to anglers Some times there are catches and at other times things are dead Large rains can quickly change the water level and change the outlook and success rate It Is usually anglers that really know this river who are the most consistent It takes several trips and many hours of fishing to find the few spots where fish usually congregate A good trip for those with their own boats and motors this weekend would be to try Lake Huron by Southampton for large bows Best hire would be an Owens number spoon rolled on a line And take your children camping too issues 10 years ago May Enjoying a bus Inp and tour to Upper
