event which must be greeted with en thusiasm by not only sup porters of his party but also all Ontario voters who dont have rigid ties to either the Conser vatives or Liberals By the time the next election is called presumably not before 1985 the ruling Con servatives will have been in power longer than any other in Canadian history Much of their success especially in the past decade when large cracks their ar mor began to appear has been based on the fact that there has been little alternative Certainly Stuart Smith and Michael Cassidy werent ade quate replacements for Premier William Davis In fact only the Stephen Lewis has presented any real alternative to the Conser vatives in the last years In Rae the NDP is offering the voters of this province an alternative A moderate socialist he is highly educated articulate personable caring excells with the media and has a firm grasp of economic and social issues At the same time it is refreshing to see the NDP adop ting policies which give it a more moderate look The economic and social policies endorsed on the weekend by the rankand file are much more practical and affordable than NDP planks offered in the past We certainly arent endors ing and the NDP yet just saying they are well worth wat ching and considering Rae has two big jobs ahead of him if he is to develop the party into a fullfledged threat to the Tones He must build the party across Ontario and attract moderate candidates like him self for the next election They have an outstanding leader now to go with that NDP needs a strong slate and a message people want to hear But he must also gain a Legislature seat as soon as possible The NDP and particularly are needed now as strong thoughtful voices in the Legislature advising prodding and persuading a very tired government For the next three years the must be a dynamic opposition The issues they are talking about are hur ting people badly right now The Ontario Liberals meet later this month to replace Smith We arent as impressed with any of their five leadership hopefuls as we are with although young Sheila Copps does offer some attraction But all five show potential to be bet ter alternatives to the Liberals than Smith was By the time the next election rolls around Davis could well be gone too It may be Utopian to hope for it but our wish is for the Liberals and Conservatives to have leaders and policies as fresh and energetic developed by then as the NDP seems now to be well on the road to offer ing Then we can look forward to an exciting and vibrant election campaign and a real choice isnt easy because tbelr efforts are frustrated by the power blocks- Zimbabwe would tike to be a social 1st nation with some traditional trappings but not like socialism in the east or west Ilia native ravages of the past wars Ten Days for World Development is designed to educate Canadians through their churches about the problems of the third world and what Canadians can do to help One way Canadians can assist the developing nations is through our national government But govern ment help must meet the expectation of the third world and not be by power block thinking The third world has out to me that I discovered my profound error and Injustice concerning all the female municipal councillors across the country A common phrase for Jourallsts to use Is town fathers However that cute little say Is as chauvinistic as Archie Bunker at his best Apologies go out to Terry Grubbe Pam Sheldon and Marilyn Serjeantson who will henceforth be labelled town mothers as far as articles written by myself go In todays battle for equality I am ashamed of myself for not realizing bow very one sided town fathers really Is I Just hope Heather Whiting will forgive my oversight My mother celebrated a birthday on Saturday She will disown me if I reveal which one Among all the lovely gifts she received was a pen with a quartz watch In the shaft of It It Is a gorgeous pen nice fine point the watch keeps accurate time Even tells you the date But I have Just one complaint It is a right handed pen I When my mother uses It she can tell the time or date at a glance Its very conven ient However when old southpaw Helen uses It the watch part Is upside down which defeats the entire purpose of having It there As I am the only left bander In my fam ily I have for years put up with all the discriminations against people like my self Gravy ladles are Impossible to use scis sors hurt the wrist and can openers are dam near Impossible to use The invention of the ball point pen was a blessing to all my school teachers because I would drag my hand through anything I had written with the old fountain pen kind smearing my work something terrible Even cars dont seem to want to cooperate with the starter and the gear shift convenient for the right handed species In the world Maybe I should move to England or Scot land But all these things are excusable you get used to what you are brought up with But it is really going too far when pens and clocks or watches are made for right with no thought to the silent minority The government has passed laws against discrimination against various minorities in this country say its time the south paws Isnt that a horrible label rise up and revolt We have our rights too MEANDERINGS by Mabel Barkmsti February Is marmalade month Time for in Indian Gosh will this winter ever end And when Chimokamatla hits you make a batch of marmalade You will see the Seville oranges in the stores No one should be afraid of making marmalade as there are so many recipes that If you mix a few it doesnt matter Use cheesecloth If you dont want too many seeds and pulp in It Or use a soft cloth to tie up everything but the rind Cheesecloth is a fantastic price Six of the bitter oranges will make a nice bath plus a sweet one and a lemon It takes a lot of hard work slivering the peel with a sharp knife but listen to your favorite radio program and you will be finished before you know it If you find a few chunky pieces do not worry You need about four and a half pints of water Put everything in a large pot and sun for an hour or two and then cover and leave overnight The next day boil until the liquid Is reduced to about half You should have about eight cups so add a cup of sugar for every cup of juice and boil until the liquid coats a spoon Put in sterilized Jars with a thin layer of wax or leave out the wax and pop in the freezer Enjoy a breakfast of homemade marmalade toast and crispy bacon Yummy Ontario and they be competing
