B4 The Acton Free Press Wednesday Feb THERE WAS SOME difficulty in cutting a hole in Fairy Lake Saturday for the ice safety demonstration A chain saw being used seized up in the cold water leaving two and a half feet thick ice to be cut through by hand Ice safety is demonstrated Some people gathered around a rectangular hole in Fairy Lake after noon to watch the first Ice Safely Demonstration sored by the Hills Recreation Department had to cut through two and half feet of ice to make he hole says pool supervisor Liz before the show could go on The going got rough when the chain saw being used to make the hole seized up from the cold water and the rest had to be done by hand However once the show got under way spectators learned how to rescue some one who had fallen through the ice The safest v ay is to just talk the person out and encourage him to kick his legs and swim onto solid ice if possible The kicking motion will also help keep him afloat Another rescue method is to extend lo the victim Anything can used including a hockcv stick a branch a acarf a belt a jacket etc The rescuer should lie down and help pull the onto safe ground If nothing is avail ibk to throw to the pirson ilu will work Here however the rescuer must take care not to let the pull him into tht water If other people are iround a human chain can formed with the first person in on arm or object to the victim All three methods demonstrated the pool staff and members of the Trek dub Two fullv outfitted divers were on I HUMAN CHAIN IS formed to help Dave Frances out of icy Fairy Lake Saturday during the ice safety demonstration Karen leads the chain with Gwyn Gibb holding tightly to her ankles DAVE BERRY of Halton Scuba Trek crawls onto solid ice during a mock incident at the ice safety demonstration Saturday Dave ranees Walter mil Dave from Scuba Trek a Bronze crest date and Mike Ashley Karen Braiding Karen and Lit from the 1 staff took part Miss said she was very impressed with the turn out and hoped to offer the demonstration again next year She pointed out how ever that the event was not totally realistic because of of snow on the ice When someone has really fillen through the ice she said rescuers could put themselves in great danger on thin ice Also there would be no snow on the surface and the rescuer could be pulled along the surface towards the victim more cosily After the demonstration the chunk of ice was pulled back up to the surface to fill In the hole barricades from the works department were placed around it Coaches corner Srs midgets top L hock DO A ROOM OR A drills shooting on the off wing passing drills and spin outs are the mechanics of a good power play Third have units practise the specific patterns repeatedly until they can execute them automatically including the various options available to them Finally work with the power play against resist once either in drills scrim mage or an actual game and make the necessary corrections or adaptations Since in an average gume a team will be on the power play per cent of the time and penalty killing for the same percentage it makes sense to practice those situations extensively Your shooting and
