In the case of the United Way of Oakvilles (UWO) 2010 campaign, the tough goal of raising $3.6 mil- lion was not only met, but sur- passed, as the UWO raised $3.9 million. The money will fund 32 social service agencies that fill the gap for local families and residents when provincially-funded social services fall short. Those agencies run 60 local human and social service programs. A tough-minded, but big-heart- ed campaign cabinet led by local realtor Mary Cardamone may have inherited a rebounding economy, but they faced a tough task after last years campaign fell a few hun- dred thousand dollars short of its target. At a celebration breakfast event held in the theatre at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, United Way passes $3.6-M target By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Its a horrible picture. An image of a shattered blue car, captured shortly after it struck a tree, draped with a sheet to prevent passersby from seeing the deceased driver. The location is McCraney Street East, just a short distance from White Oaks Secondary School. The driver was White Oaks Secondary School student Matthew McGregor, 17, who was killed in this crash on March 27, 2010. Police have said alcohol was a contributing factor. On Wednesday, Halton police, with permission from McGregors family, unveiled a new poster at White Oaks Secondary School fea- turing the grim photo of McGregors crash scene. Police are hoping this poster and others like it will succeed where so many others have failed in driving home the message of what can hap- pen when people drink and drive. The mindset behind this one is lets look at whats happened here in Halton, lets make it personal, said To save somebody elses child See Police page 10 SOBERING MESSAGE: Sharon McGregor (right), who lost her son Matthew in a fatal drunk driving accident, has given the Halton Regional police permission to use a picture of his crash scene in a poster aimed at discouraging other youths from drinking and driving. With her is Lizzy Olson (left), a friend of her son.
