Defensive tackle and backup center Justin Bloemetje blocked a Holy Trinity convert attempt in overtime, lifting the Hawks to a 17-16 victory over the Titans Friday at McMaster Universitys Ron Joyce Stadium. Bloemetje powered through the Trinity offensive line to knock down the kick by the Titans Michael Brooks and send the Loyola sideline into a frenzy. Nothing was going through my mind. I flew through the line and felt Whoa, this was too easy, put my hands up and closed my eyes, said Bloemetje. I felt the ball hit my arms and thought, Yes, it got blocked, I just won the game for my team. Adding more drama to the wild finish was the fact that Brooks who also played a strong game at quarterback had appeared to tie the game on the previous play, success- fully kicking the convert after teammate Dante Chivotti had made the score 17-16 on a two-yard touchdown run. But Trinity was whistled for too many men on the play, push- ing the Titans back 10 yards and forcing them to retry the convert. Trinity coach Anand Pillai said an injury to Kimbal MacKenzie, usually the holder on Titans convert attempts, created the confu- sion. We had to put another holder in, and the receiver who was in stayed on. There was our extra guy, said Pillai, who guided the Titans to junior championships the previous two seasons. You cant be upset about stuff like that. It happens. You win some and lose some. We lost to a good team and it went into over- time... Its tough to lose, but you cant do any- thing about that. The bizarre ending was perhaps a fitting finish to the back-and-forth affair between two of Oakvilles Catholic rivals. Loyola scored on the fifth play of the game as Daniel Chun hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Hawks starting quar- terback Laurence Baldin. A.J. Martins kicked the convert to give the Hawks an early 7-0 lead. Trinity controlled the rest of the half, making the score 7-3 on an 11-yard field goal by Brooks and then taking a 10-7 lead on a one-yard run by Ryan Lovett and a Brooks convert. The Hawks tied the game 10-10 on a 33- yard field goal by Martins with 4:55 left in regulation. Loyola then appeared poised to win the game, driving down to the Titans 11-yard line in the final two minutes. But penalties pushed the Hawks back and then a bad snap killed Loyolas chances at a game-winning field goal. Overtime was played under Canadian rules, meaning each team got a possession starting at their opponents 35-yard line. Thomas Knapp who took over as Hawks QB at halftime scored on a three- yard run on Loyolas first possession, and Martins added the convert to put the Hawks up 17-10. Trinity came right back with the touch- I flew through the line and felt Who, this was too easy, put my hands up and closed my eyes. Loyola won the game 17-16 in overtime on a blocked convert. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Beating page 34 OAKVILLES MUSIC STORE
