Awards were handed out as Sport Oakville celebrated the excellence, perseverance and dedication of its member sport organizations in the areas of sports development, perform- ance and contribution to the community. Saturdays awards were hosted by The Weather Networks Chris Mei, the second straight year he has been the master of ceremonies for the event. Two-time Olympic womens hock- ey champion Cheryl Pounder was the events guest speaker. Below are brief bios of the award winners: Athletiques International Team Award - Youth Girls Medley Relay Team: The team won gold in its division at the International Youth Meet of Champions last November at York University, finishing the race in a time of 4:47 the seventh-fastest time in the 20-plus year history of the competition. Halton Cowboys Football Club Team Award - 2009 SOFAL tyke Cowboys: The tykes were the first Halton Cowboys squad to win a Southwestern Ontario Football Association of Leagues championship, claiming the tyke white title. Many of the players on the team had never played foot- ball before. Coach Award - Paolo Iacoviello: Every team Paolo has been asso- ciated with have enjoyed their season, have been successful in play- offs and have had a high percentage of returning players the follow- ing year. Volunteer Award - Chris and Simone Richards: The husband and wife team volunteered to run the Cowboys flag football program. Under their leadership, the program grew from 29 participants last year to 75 this season. Halton Field Hockey Club Volunteer Award - Keith Penny: As president of the club, Keith has organized season-opening clinics and umpiring while ensuring that all areas of the club have continued to grow. Keith is active in all aspects of the club, including as a coach, umpire and adminis- trator. Minor Oaks Hockey Association Volunteer Award - Marshall Snowball: A life member of the MOHA, Marshall has served as a volunteer for 41 of the associa- tions 50 years of existence. He has held virtually every position within the MOHA, from a coach and trainer to executive board positions. He is the associations equipment manager this season and also coaches a peewee house league team. Oakville Aquatic Club Athlete Award - Sasha Boulton: Sasha won a gold medal at this years Ontario Summer Games, competing her 600-metre open swim, 16-kilometre bike ride and four-kilometre run in a time of 55:47. She trains 15-20 hours a week year round. Athlete Award - Gamal Assaad: Gamal won six gold medals and one silver at this years Ontario Summer Games. He also enjoyed successful performances at the Ontario Long Course Provincials and Canadian Age Group Championships. Team Award - Ontario Provincial Long-Course Team: The OAK team was the overall champion at the Ontario Long Course Provincials. The teams swimmers won 15 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze individual medals while adding eight gold, five silver and five bronze in relay. Oakville Cricket Club Athlete Award - Ali Kamal Shah: Ali was the league-leading bats- man, achieving most runs and most boundaries for the second straight season. His 525 runs made him only the second player to score 500-plus runs in a season over the past decade, and his 74 boundaries were a league record. Team Award - Oakville Chargers: The Chargers qualified for the league semifinals in both versions of the game they play, marking Towns top sportspeople recognized with awards RECOGNITION: Long-time Minor Oaks Hockey Association volunteer Marshall Snowball (right) accepts his award from Sport Oakville president David Haslam.
