The sad fact that war is not lim- ited to the past was made abun- dantly clear as images of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan were shown on huge video screens while a bugler played The Last Post. In her opening remarks, MEDIchair Halton founder Kristin Courtney thanked Canadas past and present veterans for their self- less service to the nation. We will never forget the tremendous sacrifices that you made and that continue to be made for our freedom and from the bottom of our heart we thank you, she said. You will always be remembered as our nations heroes. Courtney expressed her grati- tude to the men and women of the Canadian Forces currently serving in Afghanistan as well as those serving in Canada. She said her cares and thoughts will continue to be with the Canadian soldiers, who have been injured in Afghanistan. The 152 soldiers who have given their lives in the conflict will never be forgotten, she promised. Courtney referenced Oakvilles Colonel Geoff Parker, killed in Kabul on May 18, as being among the honoured dead. As the event continued, speak- ers from nearly every level of gov- ernment came forward to express their gratitude with Mae Scatliff reading a statement from Oakville MP Terence Young. On Nov. 11, Canadians across the country will give thanks and remember those whose courage and bravery are forever ingrained in our national conscience, said Scatliff. We honour the men and women, who dedicated their lives to protecting Canada at home and defending freedom abroad. When the flags are lowered to half staff on Remembrance Day, the spirits of Canadians will soar high as we remember our veterans. Scatliff said for more than 100 years Canadas military has defended the values of peace, democracy and the rule of law, something it has continuing to do in places like Afghanistan, Kosovo and the Persian Gulf. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn reflected on how more than 1.7 million Canadians have served and fought for the cause of freedom with many, including Oakvilles Colonel Geoff Parker, making the ultimate sacrifice. Flynn spoke about Parker, ref- erencing a speech by the Deputy Commander of Task Force Kandahar Simon Hetherington in which Parker is referred to as, well-known, highly respected and considered to be a best friend by countless army officers and sol- diers across Canada.
