The Raiders were throttled 6-2 on Saturday night by the Vaughan Vipers who were playing their first game of the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League campaign and owned a humbling 1-2-0 record heading into Tuesday nights road game against the Bramalea Blues. Spinning their wheels through much of the opening 40 minutes, the Raiders couldnt find the net until the mid-point of the third period and the power play was held scoreless for the second straight home game. Georgetown did show how dangerous its lineup can be in a 7-0 rout of the host Brampton Capitals last Thursday, but reverted back to bad habits Saturday in front of about 200 spectators at the Alcott Arena. You look at our team on paper and it should be phe- nomenal, said Raider captain Evan Zych. Its really frustrating because we havent found our chemistry yet. We saw glimpses of it against Brampton getting the puck deep, then out to the slot and boom, into the net we just have to get it going. There are some veterans who know they havent been pulling their weight yet and what happened (Saturday) and in the home opener is unacceptable. Although the Raiders have just three 20-year-olds this season, theyve returned several players from the squad that has made the conference finals for the past two years, and as Zych pointed out, just five of their skaters didnt play with junior clubs in 2007-08. While the sore points have been easy to pick out, Georgetowns goaltending has become a concern, result- ing in 18-year-old Tony Capobianco being acquired from North York, while Vince Cusick was dealt to Mississauga on Monday. The Raiders will likely face Cusick tonight (Wednesday) when they take on the Chargers, coached by Georgetowns Jay Anderson, in Port Credit at 7:30 p.m. Theres no excuse for a lack of effort and thats where were at right now, said Raider head coach and general manager James Richmond. I see too many of our guys stick-checking instead of finishing their checks with the body. We had success last year when nobody thought we were going to be that good because the guys were hard working, but there are players who we thought would step up in their second year here who have actually taken a step backward. Maybe theyre taking things for granted, and thats going to have to change. A team meeting was held Monday night and Richmond announced that veteran forward Marcus Pryde would be benched for Tuesdays game in Brampton for on-ice disciplinary reasons. Capobianco and his new teammates had a rough night against the Vipers, who skated to an easy 6-2 win in Jr. A hockey action. Photo by Eamonn Maher For the first time in five years, a Georgetown District High School junior girls basketball team scored a tournament victory as the Rebels took top spot in the East Side Shootout in Owen Sound. The Rebels routed the host Owen Sound Collegiate Vocational School 60-11 to claim the championship at the pre-season tourney. Lindsay Poulton was named MVP and Maggie Darling received praise from the GDHS coaching staff for her play at the post. In the opener, Georgetown downed OSCVI 63-31, with Darling netting 12 points and all 15 team members getting at least one basket. Game two was a 50-5 win over St. Marys High School, followed by a 54-7 triumph over Owen Sounds West Hill.
