www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 14, 2010 · 26 Local golfer recognized as All-America Scholar Oakville Trafalgar grad Michael Young has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for NCAA Division 1 by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Longwood University senior is one of only 119 Division I golfers in the U.S. to achieve the prestigious academic honor for 2009-10. To be eligible, golfers must be at least a junior or senior and compete at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in at least 70 per cent of the team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0, and maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while of high moral character and in good standing at his university. "Mike works very hard, both academically and on his golf game, so he very much deserves to be named an All-America Scholar," said Longwood men's golf head coach Kevin Fillman. "Because of the academic standing, playing time and stroke average requirements, the GCAA is one of the most difficult coaches' organizations from which to earn an award. Only a select few of the thousands who play college golf earn the right to call themselves an Academic All-American." Young, a business finance major with a minor in economics, has attained a 3.87 GPA and played in all 29 rounds this past year while leading the Lancers with his 74.7 scoring average. He posted season-low scores for 18 (71), 36 (72-72-144), and 54 holes (72-7273--217) with two top-10 finishes among seven top-20 efforts. Young is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies, a two-time recipient of the Jay Christopher DeBoer Scholarship, and served as president of the 2009-10 Longwood Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). OAK athletes swam their way to 3,023 points at the meet, easily beating out second-place Etobicoke Swim Club (2,458) and third-place Markham Aquatic Club (1,626). OAK swimmers earned 53 individual medals, including 15 gold, and added 18 team relay medals at the competition. "The swimmers began their momentum at the start of the meet and carried it right through until the end of the fourth day," said OAK coach Cathy Pardy. "To win is not only about having one fast swimmer finish first. It's a team effort and it's extremely important to maximize the number of swimmers placing in the top eight to score points. At OAK, we have built great depth in our program." Several OAK members were multiple-medal winners, led by Mack Darragh's five gold and a bronze. Kent Kikot (two gold, three silver, one bronze), Matthew Mac (two gold, two silver, one bronze), Peter Serles (one gold, two silver, two bronze), Julie Calvert (two gold, three silver) and Mika Spencer (two gold, three silver) also made regular appearances on the podium.
