7 · Wednesday, April 7, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Easter food drive could fall short, says Fareshare Despite all best efforts, the annual Easter food drive is a struggle this year at Fareshare food bank. Even after the Easter weekend, Fareshare's volunteer executive director, Dudley Clark, who had hoped the weekend would prove fruitful, was declaring the drive to be in need of help. Heading into the weekend, Clark reported the drive was down -- not by hundreds -- but thousands of pounds of food compared to previous years. It's a trend that is being experienced by food banks across the GTA. The Fareshare drive began Saturday, March 27 and continues through Sunday, April 11. More than halfway through this year's drive, donations are still down. With just more than 24,000 pounds collected so far, that compares to 30,000 pounds at last year's Easter drive and more than 45,000 pounds collected over the same number of days at the Thanksgiving food drive. Fareshare depends on the Easter drive to stock shelves for the spring, summer and early fall. It has also seen its client visits average 377 per month -- or approximately 1,200 people as most visits are by couples and families. March numbers were at 387 visits. All non-perishable donations are welcome including: canned fruit, canned vegetables (except corn), cookies and crackers, vegetable oil, canned stew, junior baby food, baby formula and desserts. Cash donations are also accepted to buy items that run low and purchase fresh foods like milk, meat and PUT ON YOUR FRIDGE!
