Hudak was in town on Thursday for an Oakville Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He spent most of his 20-minute speech outlining the problems facing the province and solutions the Conservatives can offer if elected the next time around. "We need a change in course and the Ontario PC Party wants to take Ontario down an entirely different track than we are on today," said Hudak, MPP for Niagara West-Glanbrook, who replaced John Tory as party leader in June 2009. A major focus of Hudak's speech was the economy. He lamented the fact that Ontario is facing a $24.7 billion deficit in the current fiscal year and that the current government has accumulated $65.2 billion in new debt, which he said breaks down to roughly $13,500 per household. "Twenty-five billion dollars is greater than twice what Bob Rae left the province with," he said. "Twentyfive billion dollars is actually greater than all the combined deficits of all the other provinces and territories in our country." Hudak pointed the finger of blame at excessive spending by the Liberals. "The new deficit and debt does not reflect a revenue problem," he told the audience of about 150 people. "It is the expenditure side of the ledger where most of the problem lies." Hudak also blamed the Liberals for allowing the loss of 300,000 manufacturing jobs, citing Polywheels and Ford as Oakville examples. He provided a list of ideas the Conservatives have to remedy the economy and help struggling businesses and families.
