OGC tumbler heading to worlds Skating sectionals at River Oaks Oakville's Jonathon Meehan will be one of 16 Canadian power tumblers competing at the 2009 World Age Group Championships for Trampoline and Tumbling next week in Russia. The Oakville Gymnastics Club member earned the right to represent Canada by winning the 15-16 age group at the Canada Cup in Calgary this past summer. That effort also earned Meehan a spot on the Canadian national age group tumbling team, a squad that features the country's top two athletes in each gender and category. Meehan is the third Oakville Gymnastics Club member to crack the Canadian tumbling team, following in the footsteps of Luke Mackinnon (2007) and Ryan Webb (2002). The World Age Group Championships for Trampoline and Tumbling begin Nov. 11 and conclude Nov. 22 in St. Petersburg, Russia. More than 300 of the top figure skaters in Central Ontario are showing their stuff this week at River Oaks Recreation Centre. The Oakville Skating Club is hosting the 2010 BMO Skate Canada Central Ontario Sectional Championships, which begin today (Thursday) and conclude Sunday. Tickets will be available at the door. The sectionals are the first step for skaters hoping to qualify for the East/West Challenge in December and the Canadian championships in January. Oakville Skating Club will be represented at sectionals by Gratiana Chen, Emma Dinda, Phoenix Miller-Bush and Jenna Rowland (pre-juvenile ladies); Samantha Heard and Lauren Zuk (juvenile ladies); Claire Buechler, Jamie Hicks, Ellen Mays and Lauren Woodward (pre-novice ladies); and Gabrielle Bernier and Jade Zeron (novice ladies). Pre-novice ladies compete today and tomorrow, while pre-juvenile and juvenile ladies will compete tomorrow only. The novice ladies will skate Saturday and Sunday.
