Kerr Street Dream Centre gets $300,000 in grants Oakville and Regional councils presented Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) with more than $300,000 in grants Tuesday to support its new 19,000 square foot, $4.5 million Dream Centre. KSM now provides programs and services to 5,000 people, up from 1,800 in 2005. "Council is proud to support KSM in building their Dream Centre," Mayor Burton said. "The strength of our community depends on organizations like KSM who support those who need it most." "The Kerr Street Ministries makes our community a better place to live by giving hope to Oakville's most vulnerable citizens," said Gary Carr, Halton Region Chair. "It gives me great pleasure to support our local community partners, as we work together to support those in need." "We are very grateful for the generous support from Halton Region," said Benjamin Ward, executive director, Kerr Street Ministries. "The Dream Centre will be more than just a building, a place where children discover their potential, giving hope for the future of our community." The goal of the Kerr Street Ministries is to offer children youth and adults in need a variety of programs, to bring them relief for the present and hope for the future. Programs include the Food Bank & Drop-In; Children's Ministries; Youth Programs; Kerr Street Day Camp; Partners Equipping Youth; and Christmas Wonders. According to KSM, the number of people living below the poverty level almost doubles (from 7.7 per cent in Oakville) to 14.2 per cent in the Kerr Street area; 19 per cent of families in the community are single-parent families and based on information from Statistics Canada, Kerr Street is rated as the highest risk community in Halton. The Dream Centre will open in May 2010. Numerous fundraisers, including the Mayor's Invitational Baseball Tournament -- which raised $107,000 -- have been held throughout the community to support its construction and development. The Mayor's Invitational Gala Reception at a private Oakville residence on Sept. 11 raised an additional $490,000 for the centre, which will include space for the KSM food bank, afterschool programs, computer facilities, a gymnasium, the Longo's Kitchen and a performing arts studio. Private donors have raised more than $3 million for the Dream Centre thus far. 905-827-7333 For a FREE Hearing Test.
