Vol. 52 No. 120 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 48 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Transit fares Pitching for S.E.N.A.C.A. may increase Proposed hike would give Oakville highest fares in GTA By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville may soon have some of the highest transit fares in the GTA. A plan to increase the price of Oakville Transit's adult ticket, student ticket, adult pass, student pass and Gus pass was approved unanimously Tuesday night during a meeting of Oakville's Community Services Committee. The changes, which would come into effect on Jan. 1, 2010, will go before council Monday night for final approval. In a report to the committee, Oakville Transit Director Barry Cole noted the additional money was needed to cover increasing operating costs and the expansion and enhancement of the transit system, which recently saw 19 drivers added, along with 11 buses. Cole also noted that raising transit fares ensures the tax levy is not hit with the full weight of the costs incurred by Oakville Transit. The proposed changes would see an adult ticket price go up 3.9 per cent from $2.55 to $2.65, a student ticket increase 2.4 per cent from $2.10 to $2.15, an adult pass go up 5.7 per cent from $88 to $93, a student pass increase 12.1 per cent from $58 to $65 and a Gus pass rise in cost by 13 per cent from $23 to $26. The increase would make an Oakville Transit adult ticket the most expensive adult ticket in the GTA with Durham coming in a close second at $2.63 for their Adult Ticket. An adult ticket currently costs $2.40 in Mississauga, $2.30 in Burlington, $2.50 in Brampton and $2.60 in York.
