5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 11, 2009 Rapid transit corridor on regional council's agenda System would connect Halton to Etobicoke By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP The next step toward the construction of a rapid transit corridor on Dundas Street stretching from Halton to the TTC's Kipling Station in Etobicoke will be on the agenda at Halton regional council Wednesday. Council will be asked to endorse a staff recommendation to retain a consulting firm to undertake a feasibility and implementation study for the transit corridor. Though a regional staff report describes the project as a bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor, the consultant will actually identify the vehicle and technology requirements as part of the study. The Province will pick up the cost of the study, $787,000, as part of its funding for projects included in Metrolinx's 25-year, $50 billion transportation plan for the Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx's plan, dubbed The Big Move, considers the Dundas route one of its quickwin initiatives. Halton Region is already in the midst of widening the roadway and bridges on Dundas across the length of the region, a project due to be completed over the next five years with much of the cost being picked up through development charges. Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr has said transportation staff has been planning for the inclusion of bus-only lanes as part of the expansion project. Metrolinx's long-term plans are to connect other parts of Oakville, Burlington and Milton to the Dundas route. Those plans include: · A rapid transit service, possibly dedicated bus lanes, along Trafalgar Road between Hwy. 407 and midtown Oakville, to be built over the next 15 years. A second phase, to be completed within 25 years, would extend this line to downtown Milton. · A rapid transit link such as dedicated bus lanes along Brant Street from Fairview GO Station in Burlington to connect to the Dundas BRT, again over the next 25 years. A similar rapid transit link from Fairview GO to downtown Burlington is in the plans to be built first, over the next 15 years.
