5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 3, 2009 First sign of fall -- Halton's free compost giveaway Halton Region will soon host the fall session of its free compost giveaway at its waste management site. The regular event allows residents to shovel up to seven bags of compost produced from the leaf and yard waste collected by the Region. The compost is not from the Region's GreenCart organic recycling program. The Region is reminding residents that the compost is best used on gardens or Giveaway dates Sept. 18,19, 21 lawns after blending it with topsoil or another gardening fill. For best growing results, it is recommending a split of 60 per cent topsoil and 40 per cent compost. Residents must bring their own shovel and containers, such as garbage or yard waste bags, reusable containers, or a trailer. Though the compost is free, the Region encourages residents to make a donation of non-perishable food items or cash to support food banks within the community. During this spring's compost giveaway, regional staff collected approximately seven tonnes of food and a record $12,172. The compost giveaway will take place at the Halton Waste Management Site, 5400 Regional Road 25, in Milton.
