Yesterday's (Thursday's) opening round of this week's Open was lengthily delayed by rain, marking the second straight year play was suspended in the first round at the Abbey. Fifty-two players had begun their round yesterday when play was suspended at 8:38 a.m. The tournament did not resume until 4:10 p.m., nearly eight hours later. More rain is forecast for today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). Last year, the first round was delayed by six hours due to rain. Play was also delayed for six more hours in the next two rounds, leaving the grounds crew scrambling to get the course back in playable condition. They did, allowing the tournament to go its full 72 holes. The Canadian Open has been shortened to less than 72 holes only once in the past 25 years (1996). This is the 11th event of the 2009 PGA Tour season to suspend play. Most recently, the John Deere Classic suspended the entire second round because of a dangerous weather situation. The lift, clean and place/preferred lies rule was put into effect prior to the start of yesterday's round, making the RBC Canadian Open the fifth event of the seaNIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER son to be played with preferred lies.
