AND Town expands Heritage Register The Town of Oakville will add an additional 354 properties to its Heritage Register in an effort to help identify culturally important sites and to preserve them if necessary. The announcement, which was made last week, means the Town may impose a 60-day waiting period before the demolition of any of the sites. As inclusion on the register does not mean designation as an official heritage property, renovations and alterations to these properties can still be done. The waiting period gives the Town time to consider whether the property is worthy of official heritage designation. If it is not fully designated, there will be sufficient time for full documentation of the property or cultural heritage resource, so its significance can be retained for future study. Owners of the 354 properties and sites will be notified of their property's status by mail and will receive a pamphlet with detailed information about what inclusion on the register means. In the past, only 19th century sites were designated and preserved with a heritage designation, but as the community has matured, the town has identified properties with cultural and historical significance from the 20th century as well, including modern architecture, ruins and landscape features. The current Heritage Register was created in 2007 and now includes 951 properties. To learn more about the Heritage Register, visit www.oakville.ca/heritageregister.htm. GOV.
