The convention of East Grey met in solemn conclave at Markdale last Monday for the purpose of choosing candidates for the Commons and Local Legislature for the coming elections. The weather was most gorgeous for this season of the year, and a large representation from the various municipalities were present. The press was also well represented, Messrs. Patterson of the Meaford Mirror, Starrett of the Thornbury News, Mortimer of Shelburne Free Pree and Fawcett of the Flesherton Advance being present. The meeting was held in the roller skating rink, a very suitable place, Mr. Thos. Kells, president in the chair. The first nomination being for the Dominion Parliament, Dr. Sproule, M.P., received the unanimous vote of the convention without opposition. The following were then nominated for the Local, viz,--Capt Rorke, N. McColman, Thos. Kells, Thos. McKenny, Thos. Gilray, Dr. Christoe and John Lyons, the two latter withdrew before the vote was taken. On the first ballot Capt Rorke led with N. McColman second and T. Kells third. The second ballot gave Rorke a large majority over all others combined, when he was declared the unanimous choice of the convention by a standing vote. The various candidates expressed themselves well pleased with the result and determined to give the nominee their hearty support. Capt. Rorke thanked the meeting heartily for their confidence after which the convention broke up well pleased with the result and delighted with the great harmony which prevailed throughout. Dr. Sproule, M.P. and Capt. Rorke provided a sumptuous supper at the Markdale House for the company, about 200.
