36 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 26, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Tight playoff race ensuring Blades stay focused, captain says Continued from page 33 By comparison, the Blades put Milton away early. But, despite outshooting the IceHawks 21-3 in the second period, Oakville didn't score until Ryan Murphy made it 4-2 with 2:48 left in the period. If the visitors were thinking they had weathered the worst of the storm and could rally in the third, Welsh burst that bubble early when he scored 13 seconds into the period. "That took the wind out of our sails," said Milton's Curtis Renaud. "We were hoping to get back in it and then they came out and scored right off the bat." Welsh would continue to deflate the IceHawks with a powerplay goal midway through the period and another with 3:21 remaining. He very nearly added a fourth goal in the final minutes. Circling around the net with a wide open side to jam the puck in, Welsh's stick broke and the puck slid through the crease. It was not only the first time the Union College-bound forward had scored three times in a period, it was also his first Jr. A hat trick. His last three-goal effort was two years ago in Jr. B with Waterloo, Think Green. Breathe Easy. Early on, it looked like teammate Luke Moodie was the best bet for a hat trick. After Milton opened the scoring, Welsh set up Lindsay Sparks midway through the first to tie the game. Moodie gave Oakville the lead less than two minutes later and then scored a shorthanded goal to make it 3-1 before the end of the period. The Blades' inability to capitalize on their numerous chances in the second would allow Milton to stay in the game. Justin Basso's power-play goal pulled Milton within one before Murphy, who finished the night with three points, scored to give the Blades some breathing room. A night earlier, the Streetsville Derbys' dreams of an upset were allowed to live on much longer than they should have. Although Oakville outshot the Derbys 38-18 in the first two periods, the Blades were up just 3-2 after 40 minutes. Again it was Murphy that provided the two-goal cushion when he scored his second of the night 1:43 into the third. Kellan Lain and Sparks would add to the lead before a late Streetsville powerplay marker closed the scoring in a 6-3 Oakville victory. Matt Ribeiro and Julian Cimadamore also scored for the Blades against the Derbys, while Dan Hunt, Dustin Alcock, Kyle Badham and Welsh each had two assists. Hunt also had two helpers Saturday against Milton, as did Michael Ingoldsby. The two wins moved Oakville a point ahead of Georgetown and the Burlington Cougars, both of whom picked up wins Saturday, in the MacKinnon Division standings. At 22-4-0, the Blades haven't been able to distance themselves from their rivals, but Welsh said that has helped keep the team sharp. "If we got off to this kind of start last year, we would have been free and clear," he said. "Now every game for us is a big game. That's good to keep us focused. After winning (the league championship) last year, it's helped to get back into the regular season with a tight race." Notes: Oakville has had at least 52 shots on goal in its last three games while holding its opponents to 28 or less... Sparks has eight points in five games since returning from the World Jr. A Challenge, where he helped Canada East win the bronze medal. He has recorded two or more points in six of his last seven contests. UP TO UP TO $1400 + $1000 + GOV. CASH BACK *Call for details.
