34 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Blakelock student to compete at national karate championships T.A. Blakelock student Gourville Bezuidenhout has been named to the Ontario team that will compete in the national karate championships next month in New Brunswick. Bezuidenhout, a member of Hourahine's Martial Arts and Fitness Centre in Cambridge, is no stranger to elite competition. He represented South Africa at the 2001 world championships, then wore Canadian colours at the worlds four years later. He also hopes to represent Canada at this summer's Junior Pan-American Karate Championships, to be held in Chile. Bezuidenhout finished first in his age/weight division of the Karate Ontario Grand Prix series, despite competing in only three of the four Grand Prix events. He was among a number of elite athletes from various sporting disciplines who were honoured by the City of Cambridge earlier this year with an Athletic Achievements Awards ceremony. FLYING HIGH: The Oakville mite Angels recently won the championship at the Waterloo Ghosts Invitational Fastpitch Tournament. Mite Angels soar to Waterloo title Karly Gomes belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Oakville mite Angels a 4-3 win over the Mississauga North Tigers in the championship game at the recent Waterloo Ghosts Invitational Fastpitch Tournament. After Gomes' home run gave Oakville the lead, Maddie MacGrandle pitched a scoreless inning to secure the victory and earn the Angels the gold medal. The Angels opened the tournament with a 5-4 win over Guelph. The next day, Oakville earned a 4-4 tie with North Mississauga, thanks in large part to an outstanding defensive play. Jamie Jang's strong throw from the outfield was relayed to the plate by MacGrandle, where Alessandra Castro tagged out the Tigers runner that was attempting to score the go-ahead run. The Angels followed that up with an 11-4 win over Kitchener to advance to the playoff round. In the semifinal, the Angels faced Guelph. With strong pitching from Ciara Papaionnou and a big inning keyed by hits by Marielle Wing, Amanda Dimascio, Jang, Papaioannou and Castro, the Angels won 98 to advance to the final. Other members of the team are Katie Jaeggin, Nicole Lemieux and Charlene Cruz. Maureen Darrigo is the team's head coach, assisted by Don Slinger. Marc Lemieux manages the squad. 'Horns even mark with shutout Stellar defensive play lifted the Oakville Longhorns to a 19-0 road victory over the Toronto Raiders last weekend, squaring the Longhorns' record at 1-1 in Northern Football Conference play. The Oakville defence accounted for nearly half of the Longhorns' points, limited the Raiders to less than two yards a carry and intercepted Toronto quarterback Dave Ferkul three times. One of those picks went for an Oakville major, a 60-yard return by Kirby Ginn in the second quarter to complete the scoring. "We're where we wanted to be defensively right now," said Oakville head coach Barry Emo. Other Longhorns points came on a 75yard touchdown pass from Josh Spanik to Vaughan Swart, a conceded safety and a 10yard field goal by Mike Ray. The shutout masked Oakville's own offensive struggles. The Longhorns compiled only 167 total yards of offence and turned the ball over twice themselves. Emo attributes much of the Longhorns' impotent attack to the fact the team lost would-be starting quarterback Tommy Dennison (Dennison left for business reasons) a week before the beginning of the season. "We tailor-made this offence to be a passing attack and we're struggling to find our groove timing-wise," said Emo. "It's tough when you lose a player of Tommy Dennison's skills and abilities. We're getting better on a week-to-week basis." Emo noted he was impressed with his team's discipline. The Longhorns were flagged only once for five yards in the contest. Wayne Sliwinsky led Oakville with seven tackles. Swart finished the game with six receptions for 95 yards, adding a touchdownsaving tackle in the fourth quarter after the Longhorns missed a field goal. The Longhorns will travel to North Bay Saturday for a date with the winless Bulldogs. Oakville's next home game is scheduled for June 28, a 7 p.m. clash with the Tri City Outlaws at Bronte Athletic Field. -- Jon Kuiperij Administrative Assistant Experienced Installer Covers Moldpro Inc.
