www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 2, 2008 - 49 OAK top breaststroke team at Davis Cup While Oakville Aquatic Club's (OAK) Olympic trials swimmers were taking a well-deserved break, other members of the club were dominating competition at the Victor Davis Memorial Cup in Guelph. OAK claimed a total of 91 medals at the Victor Davis Cup, including 29 gold, 23 silver, and 39 bronze. It also took home the most significant trophy of the meet, the Victor Davis trophy, as the top breaststroke team at the competition. This year's local round will be held Saturday, May 10 at Oakville Little League's Field of Dreams, located at 425 Cornwall Rd. Competition, which will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m., is open to all children in Oakville, Mississauga, Burlington and the surrounding areas, regardless of whether they play Little League or not. Pitch Hit & Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. More than 560,000 kids across North America, ages 7-14, are expected to participate in this year's program. Participants will pitch to a strike zone target from a distance of 45 feet; hit off a tee for distance and accuracy; and race in a timed sprint from second base to home plate. Competitors are divided into four age groups (7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14) and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including the Toronto Blue Jays Team Championships and the Pitch Hit & Run finals at the 2008 MLB All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium in New York City. Last year, local resident Tristan Pompey became the first Canadian to be crowned a Pitch Hit & Run champion when he competed at the MLB All-Star Game in San Francisco. Local pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around champion in each age group, will advance to sectionals, scheduled for late May. Sectional winners will compete at the Rogers Centre in June. All participants at the local competition will also receive a free hot dog and drink, courtesy of Oakville Little League.
