Last week, anyone found idling a vehicle at the high school also found themselves receiving a visit from members of the school's Environmental Council. Led by Grade 12 student Melinda Warren, the council members ran the high school's first Anti-Idling Campaign. A large banner graced the front of the Merchant's Gate school announcing, "This is an idle-free zone." It served fair warning to those approaching in vehicles and environmental club students wore bright orange vest as, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, students were on patrol. "All of the volunteers have a huge interest in the environment and in making a difference so they all have large amounts of initiative in terms of handing out the flyers and asking people to turn their cars off," said Warren, in her first year on the environmental council. "We have found a large number of parents picking their kids up have left their cars running and they don't realize how much harm even idling for five minutes makes to the environment," said Warren. "For example, if we avoided idling for just five minutes per day, we would prevent more than 3,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Also idling for 10 seconds costs more than turning your car on and off. Because of astonishing facts like these, we want to make individuals in our community more aware of the harm of idling and we hope that they will think twice before idling again," Warren said. "I thought that idling would be one of the best ways to make an impact on the parents of our com- munity as for the most part they are the primary drivers for students of our school," said Warren. The student then contacted the Town of Oakville and it provided the students with the banner, vests and information cards they handed out to students and parents. Warren said she joined the environmental council at Abbey Park because she wanted to make a difference in the environment. "I led the waste reduction week at Abbey Park as well, where students were challenged to see how many re-usable containers they could use for one day instead of plastic bags, tin foil and more," said Warren. "It is up to the new generation to make a difference, because if we don't, no one will. Making a difference, even if it's a small one, makes a difference in the health of the environment in a huge way," said Warren.
