SPORTSBRIEFS The Raiders were winless in three games at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament. Aquinas lost its opener 4-1 to the Beaver Brae Broncos on Wednesday. Renata Martone had the Raiders' lone goal, assisted by Ellen Zurawell. The Raiders, seeded 12th in the tournament, got a goal from Lauren Kadet, assisted by Cassy Russo and Hilary Farr, in the final minute of the second period to their game against the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 1-1. The Celtics, the tournament's second seed, would break the tie with 7:34 remaining and increase their lead to 3-1 a minute later. The Celtics then added three goals in the final three minutes for a 6-1 victory. The Celtics went on to play for the bronze medal. Lang, Matheson seeking Olympic berth Oakville's Kara Lang scored in Canada's 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago, moving the Canadian women's soccer team within two wins of earning a berth in the Olympics. Lang fired a shot into the top right corner from 15 metres out in the 39th minute, extending Canada's lead to 3-0. The Canadian team, which also includes Oakville's Diana Matheson, faces Costa Rica tomorrow (Sunday) and a win would secure Canada a place in the semifinals. The top two teams in the tournament will advance to the Olympics. Jones 10th at World Cup triathlon race Oakville's Kyle Jones finished 10th at the Mooloolaba World Cup Triathlon in Australia last weekend. Jones, was just over a minute off the pace, finishing the race in one hour, 50 minutes and 58 seconds. Spain's Javier Gomez won with a time of 1:49:50. Local girls help Defensa to provincial silver Two Oakville girls helped the Defensa Volleyball Club win silver at last weekend's 15-under Tier 1 provincial championships. Nicolette Serratore and Paige Vukson are members of the squad that finished second among the 75 teams across the province that compete in the age division. Defensa, a first-year club that features players from Oakville and Burlington, continues its season this weekend with the 16U provincial championships. It will also compete at the national championships later this year in Moncton, New Brunswick. Polyanthus Landscapes Inc. Dr. Bamrah Atom B Hornets rally for East Division win The Oakville BMO Financial Group atom B Hornets were victorious in both regulation time and a shootout last Sunday in Bowmanville to capture the Lower Lakes Female Hockey Association's East Division title. Oakville needed to win the third game of the championship series to force a tiebreaking overtime or shootout, having played to a scoreless draw with the Clarington Flames in the opener and then dropping the second game by a 1-0 score. The Hornets blanked the Flames 4-0 in the game, then played through a scoreless overtime period before defenceman Lily Morrow gave them a 1-0 win in a seven-round shootout. Lia Widell stopped all the Flames attempts in the shootout and also recorded the shutout in the game. Maddie Sisokin (two), Sydney Davison and Tegan Duncan scored in Game 3 for Oakville, which is competing in the league's Final Four round this weekend. Rhiannon Ford, Elizabeth O'Hara, Sophie Schneider, Taylor McKibbon, Jessica Thomson and Morrow drew special praise from Hornets coach Brian Morrow for their defensive work in the final game against Clarington.
