40 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 4, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Sheridan textile student wins international student competition DALA Kerry Croghan, a student in the Textile Studio of Sheridan's Crafts and Design program, has won first place in the Apparel/Personal Accessories category of the SURTEX 2008 International Student Competition held recently in White Plains, New York. Croghan's award-winning entry is entitled Windswept Collection, inspired by "the natural elements of wind and water, and their random, swirling movements." Croghan's design was singled out by the judges for its "couture quality, versatility of design, and poetic vision of abstract movement." As a first place winner, Croghan receives $500 plus a two-night hotel stay in New York City to attend the annual SURTEX show taking place May 18-20. SURTEX is North America's premier trade show geared exclusively to the sale and license of art and design. It features 400 exhibitors and attracts approximately 6,000 visitors. The SURTEX International Student Design Competition is open to third and fourth year students enrolled in a surface design or related program. This year's competition attracted more than 100 entries from 22 schools worldwide. Students were challenged to create a collection of coordinating surface designs inspired by movement. Prizes were awarded in four categories: Apparel/Personal Accessories, Commercial Interior, Home Elements and Stationery/Paper Products/Craft. Sheridan's Crafts and Design Program has been developing artists in Glass, Ceramics, Textiles and Furniture for the past forty years. Symphony hosts Meet a Pianist The Oakville Symphony Orchestra is inviting youth to Meet a Pianist on Saturday, April 12. The orchestra continues its series of mini-concerts in the form of an entertaining, informative and interactive presentation by Sarah Zbogar, a multi-talented Oakville musician in piano, violin and voice. Zbogar earned a Royal Conservatory ARCT degree in both piano and violin. Formerly a high school music teacher, she now teaches private piano lessons. Zbogar is also a violinists with the symphony. The mini-concert is 30 minutes long, and is aimed at all-ages, but especially children between the ages of four and nine. Meet a Pianist will take place Saturday, April 12 at St. Matthew's Parish Church, at the intersection of Monks Passage and Nottinghill Gate.
