www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 4, 2008 - 17 Head of Anglican Church of Canada visits By Paloma Migone SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Bishop Fred Hiltz, head of the Anglican Church of Canada, came to Oakville's St. Simon to highlight optimistic news to faithful members at their 10 a.m. service on Sunday. His uplifting message contrasted the negative media reports in February when two area parishes broke away to join a conservative church group. Sunday's visit was the bishop's first in Oakville since becoming head of the Anglican Church of Canada last year. His mission was to raise awareness of The Primate World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), an organization dedicated to providing financial and human resources to restore, maintain, and develop troubled communities in Canada, Africa, Asia, Latin American and Caribbean. "The Anglican Church of Canada is strong and well," said Hiltz during the service and also reminded St. Simon members about the connection between their faith and the power of giving to others. "When you support PWRDF, you are really living in a faithful way your baptism vows--to respect the dignity of other people, Bishop Fred Hiltz to help people who are in very difficult circumstances and to do what you can in your own way with your own resources to try and change the world for good," said Hiltz. As first Primate to be president of PWRDF, Hiltz spoke about the role of the organization and the importance of helping less fortunate communities at home and abroad. "His visit was great and he centred on the mission of the ministry of the church worldwide, which I think is a message that we need to hear and we need to remember," said Rev. Darcey Lazerte. "I never met him before and I never even heard about how he preached. I found his message was uplifting and insightful and he was personable at the same time." Date: The Primate's visit comes more than a month after St. Hilda's Church in Oakville and St. George's in Lowville, separated from the Anglican Church of Canada because of their liberal views and joined the Anglican Network in Canada. During the service, Hiltz briefly acknowledged the difficult challenges the church had faced, but highlighted its strengths and support received through the PWRDF. "We've got some very difficult challenges in front of us. We've got the reality that several parishes across the country have left the Anglican Church of Canada and that's difficult for all of us to bear. We don't like seeing that sort of thing happening, people breaking away," said Hiltz in an interview afterwards. "At the same time, I think we also need to help people see that all has not been rue. That there are other aspects of the life of the Anglican Church of Canada that continue to be very strong and continually enjoy a lot of good support." The parish was filled with people, an unusual sight for a day dubbed "low Sunday" because of the paltry attendance following Easter. People came out to meet the Primate and say good-bye to the Assistant Curate Rev. Jeff Ward, who is leaving to go to another parish. "It's a great honour for us to have him here. It is not everyday you have the head of the church of Canada come to your church," said Diana Coen, a member of St. Simon for 14 years. After the service ended, Hiltz conversed with members and headed to the luncheon held at the parish. The small St. Simon community and Hiltz joined for food and farewell sketches for Ward ending the meeting with laughs. "I love these opportunities where I can come and worship with people on a Sunday morning and see the parish and its life for what it is," said Hiltz.
