www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 26, 2007 - 37 Time to register for Incredibowl 2008 Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS) is holding its second annual bowlathon, Incredibowl '08: POP...Goes the 80s!, on Saturday, Feb. 16. Last year's family fun bowling event saw more than 250 70sthemed bowlers raised $20,000 to support SAVIS' ongoing work. SAVIS is a charitable non-profit organization serving Halton Region since 1987. Its services include a 24-hour crisis line, free confidential individual and group counselling for survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse, accompaniment, advocacy services, and educational and multicultural outreach programs. One half of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. Children and youth make up 61 per cent of reported sexual assault cases alone. In Canada, every 17 minutes a women is sexually assaulted. Women with disabilities are 34 per cent more likely than non disabled women to be physically or sexually assaulted by their intimate partner. Studies suggest that each year, between 50 000 and 100 000 lesbian women and 500 000 gay men are battered. Supporting SAVIS can help stop the violence and ensure that critical services continue to be available to members of the community. Incredibowl 2008 will be an inclusive and diverse event since violence affects everyone. It's known that some communities are at a higher risk for experiencing violence immigrant and refugee women, women of colour, women with disabilities, Aboriginal women, and individuals from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer communities. Incredibowl 2008: POP...Goes the 80s will be taking place on Feb. 16 at Burlington Bowl from 2-5 p.m. and will feature as much bowling as can be fit into three hours under the neon lights. The event will include favorite tunes from the 80s, prizes and competitions, a light lunch, a chance to win a Grand Prize trip sponsored by Via Rail Canada and more. Currently teams of four to six bowlers are being recruited to help raise pledges for the event as well as volunteers to join the planning committee.
