www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 16, 2007 - 51 Sheridan hosts art jam Nov. 23 Sheridan College's Oakville campus is calling on students with a creative edge to take part in an art jam on Friday, Nov. 23. The event will take place in the college's pub and will feature three `jam walls' propped up on easels and tables with various surfaces to paint on, including skate decks, vinyl records, lamp shades, blank t-shirts, lawn gnomes and toilet seats. Customary surfaces such as canvases will also be available for purchase at the event as well. Organized by illustration students Tyrel McNicol and Amanda Sheehan, the event will also feature a DJ, a breakdancing crew and art documentaries running on the big screens. There will be a full bar, and people are encouraged to bring food for a pot luck dinner. When the art jam is over, the plan is to auction the pieces off to raise funds for a year-end grad show. The art jam on Nov. 23 begins at 8 p.m. at the College pub, is free of cost and is open to creative students. While some materials will be available, it will not be enough to satisfy a large crowd. Artists are encouraged to bring their own materials in terms of paint and markers. Surfaces will be available, but anything clean and new will have to be purchased at the event. GRAND OPENING World AIDS Day Concert Dec. 1 An award-winning singer and songwriter is performing on World Aids Day to help sexually-abused children in Cambodia. Canadian musician Kelita will perform a Christmas Benefit Concert to raise $30,000 to support young girls rescued from the sex trade industry in Cambodia. The Heavenly Night Benefit Concert recently released on a CD takes place Saturday, Dec. 1 at The Meeting House Theatre in Oakville. The concert features traditional Christmas songs with fresh new arrangements from smooth jazz to R & B, along with four original songs composed by Kelita. Inspired after watching a documentary on the sex trade industry and a trip to Cambodia in 2006, Kelita has made it her mission to aid restoration of young girls rescued from child sexual slavery. In Cambodia, as many as 100,000 children as young as three, are forced into prostitution. A private gala event and news conference will proceed the concert with catered refreshments by Twist Catering, between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Kelita will discuss the issue and share her vision of how the raised money will benefit about 40 young girls in Cambodia. The concert begins at 7 p.m. The Meeting House is located at 2700 Bristol Circle. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $35 at the door. For more information, visit www.heavenlynight.org.
