There is something wrong with the Catholic high schools today, when authorities care more about what the students are wearing as opposed to what they are doing. The uniform policy at Holy Trinity Catholic High School has become stricter and overenforced throughout this past year. Writing up students, giving out detentions and suspensions for uniform infractions have become a daily routine, while enforcing the no narcotics policy appears to be diminishing. In the student code of conduct, possession or use of narcotics, such as marijuana, is listed under a Mandatory Suspension Circumstance, whereas the uniform policy does not state any sort of suspension for an infraction. The consequence for a uniform violation results in a student not being permitted into class. Authorities stand outside the student cafeteria each day watching the students walking by and writing them up for each uniform infraction they see at the school. They check you up and down. This year it has gone even farther from the traditional, `do up your buttons!' teachers now check your shoes, socks and even your pant hems. One uniform infraction and you are written up or sent to the office, says a Grade 12 student. When asked, teachers admitted that the school's new administrative body has resulted in awareness and made it a reaction for teachers that when students pass them by they check their uniform from the floor up, disregarding what the student may have been doing. Authorities at Holy Trinity Catholic School should spend more time enforcing other school policies, such as the "no narcotics policy", as opposed to over enforcing and focusing the vast majority of their attention on the uniform. Less emphasis should be spent inspecting uniforms and more towards the behaviour of the students. I am not saying to disregard the uniform policy, for surely it is an important policy -- the student code of conduct states, "the school uniform is a sense of personal pride that reflects our Catholic values" and should nonetheless be enforced. However, policy priorities should reflect important social issues and the impact it has on the overall school environment. According to Statistics Canada, since 2000, the rate of high school students participating in marijuana use has increased more than 20 per cent. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may be susceptible to many different types of respiratory problems that tobacco smokers encounter. In addition, marijuana damages an individual's short-term memory as well as causing lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. When students were asked about narcotic use the majority of students admitted to knowing of, seeing or using drugs on school property. When asked how often this occurs, they admitted it's on a daily basis. So how do teachers and authorities not notice these students that they see and talk to daily? Are they too focused and distracted over enforcing the Uniform Policy, allowing students to get away with criminal behaviour right beneath their noses? School authorities need to focus their time and efforts demonstrating consistency with the enforcement of all school policies and not centre their focus on just one.
