One man changed that, and that man was Terry Fox. This year marks the 27th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run, and all Oakville residents are invited to honour Terry Fox and continue his Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. The event is on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Abbey Park Secondary School, next to the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre (Third Line south of Upper Middle Road). The Run begins at 10 a.m., with registration at 9 a.m. Participants can choose to run, walk, bicycle, or inline skate either a 5K or 10K route. Participants will start the Run to the sound of Elizabeth Sheridan's bagpipes. The Opening Ceremonies will start at 9 a.m. and will be hosted by Dan Ferrone. Dorothy and Daisy Progosh will lead in the dren. Pledge sheets are available at all Town recreation centres and various businesses throughout Town. Registration is also available on site on the day of the Run. There is still time to register a team for Oakville's Team Challenge. Your team can be large or small there is no minimum size to join. Families can also get involved as a team and challenge other families to raise funds. To get involved in the Terry Fox Run Corporate Team Challenge, register online at www.terryfoxrun.org or call Keri Schoonderwoerd at 905-469-0828. Terry Fox ran a marathon a day in 1980. Honour his memory by taking part in this non-competitive event where people get together as individuals, families and groups to raise money in Terry's name. It is a day of celebrating Terry's legacy and helping to keep his dream of a cure for cancer alive.
